Are you an evil supervillain? Are you looking for a new lair? Then check out this list of diabolical-looking buildings for some seriously sinister inspiration. They might look like dodgy dens from a James Bond movie, but they#39;re actually a bunch of awesomely creative, non-nefarious structures from around the world. The list contains everything from a dancing house in Prague and a train station in Lyon to a congress centre in Hangzhou and a research institute in Berlin. You#39;re sure to find some great design ideas. #1 Buzludzha, Bulgaria保加利亚Buzludzha#2 Philadelphia City Hall, Philadelphia, USA美国费城市政厅#3 Mahanakhon Tower, Bangkok, Thailand泰国曼谷MahaNakhon大厦#4 Polygone Riviera, France法国Polygone Riviera购物中心#5 Riverside Museum, Glasgow, UK英国格拉斯哥,河畔物馆#6 Former Research Institute For Experimental Medicine, Berlin, Germany德国柏林前实验医学研究所#7 Catholic Church, Paks, Hungary匈牙利柏加斯天主教堂#8 Bahnhof Office Built Into A Former Anti-Atomic Shelter, Stockholm, Sweden瑞典斯德哥尔,前防原子庇护所(现互联网办公室)#9 Maison St Cyr, Brussels, Belgium比利时布鲁塞尔Maison St Cyr#10 Fort Alexander (Plague Fort), Saint Petersburg, Russia俄罗斯圣彼得堡亚历山大堡#11 Clermont-Ferrand Cathedral, Clermont-Ferrand, France法国克莱蒙·费朗大教堂#12 Dc Tower I, Vienna, Austria奥地利维也纳Dc Tower#13 The National Library Of Belarus, Minsk, Belarus白俄罗斯明思克国家图书馆 /201701/488334

Meet the pointillist Fed. It is five years since the Federal Reserve introduced its “dot plot”, a graphic showing where different members thought the Fed Funds rate would be at different points in the future. But for almost all of that history, markets have systematically refused to believe the dots. The dot plot has pointed to imminent rate rises and traders have placed all their bets on continuing cheap money. Late last year, the election of Donald Trump finally succeeded in jolting growth expectations higher, and futures market expectations at last fell in line with the dots. Both entered 2017 signalling that three rate rises were likely for the year. Now that the market believes the dots, those dots have at last become a valuable weapon for the Fed’s monetary policy. So it was that the Fed succeeded in cushioning Wednesday’s rate rise, almost exactly as it presumably desired, by the masterly inactive strategy of not changing its dots. As the year dawned, a rate rise as soon as this month was thought unlikely. And yet it has happened, and been greeted by cheerful buying of both stocks and bonds. That is largely because the dot plot remained unchanged. With this rate rise clearly signalled, and priced, more or less everything today depended on the future trajectory of rate rises. Now that traders take the dots seriously, the Fed had an easy way to signal that it was not accelerating from its prior intention of hiking three times this year. Beyond the dots, Janet Yellen, the Fed’s chairwoman, studiously declined invitations to speculate that the Fed might attempt to sell bonds from the vast portfolio it owns as a means to push up rates. And there was even one dovish dissenter in Neel Kashkari. (Neel Kashkari)。Adding all of this together, this made today’s news about as lenient for the future course of rates as it could possibly have been. A third rate rise this year is now only a 50/50 shot, according to the futures market. At 2.6 per cent at the beginning of the day, the 10-year bond yield had been on the cusp of breaking out upwards from its decades-long downward trend, but instead dropped to 2.5 per cent. The fear of a disorderly rise in bond yields can quieten again. Other worries have also diminished. The chance of a crisis in emerging markets diminished once their currencies enjoyed their strongest day against the dollar in a year, according to JPMorgan. The sharp weakening in the dollar reduces for now the risk that strong monetary policy counteracts the administration’s attempts to narrow the US trade deficit. And the sense that rates are not heading too high too far combined with the news from the Netherlands to drive a very strong day for European stocks, accompanied by a fall in European volatility to its lowest since the financial crisis. All of this may make this one of the most happily received rate increases on record. Insofar as the Fed’s aim was to raise rates as gently as possible, so as not to scare the children, it has succeeded. It will probably raise rates again in June, giving it six months — until the September meeting — to assess whether the US economy will really get a fiscal boost, and whether real growth has followed through from the startlingly strong confidence surveys in recent weeks. But reasons for concern persist. The dot plots may have settled around the same median, but the committee moved in a more hawkish direction. The number who think there will be only two more rate rises reduced to three, while 14 plan to be more aggressive. So cutting the market’s implied odds of three rate rises to only a 50-50 shot is a mistake. And, of course, rates remain highly accommodative. The Fed has plenty of time to reassess and tighten up, but the initial market reaction, at least, increases the risk that it will have to do so. For now, however, the happiness and risk-taking can continue. Are there reasons for concern? A sharp rise for mortgage-backed bonds, and a fall in mortgage rates, might be unwelcome, particularly as confidence in the housing market had nearly returned to its levels of the 2006 bubble. And gold had its best day since the Friday after the Brexit referendum. So there is a case that the Fed has allowed the risks of “melt-up” and inflation to increase too far. Concern will shift back to fearing that it is behind the curve rather than ahead of it. But for now, the calm that has lasted since the election remains unpunctured. The Fed is walking the line successfully. The dots have it.

Toys during festivals are quite flowery and customary. In the Spring Festival, people use firecrackers and fireworks; in the Lantern Festival, there are lanterns in the shape of lotus, monkeys, dragons, etc; in the Pure Brightness kites will be flown in the blue sky;and during the Dragon Boat Festival, people will take sachet with them. Old people#39;s sachet looks like a peach, symbolizing longevity while children#39;s sachets are of lovely patterns, with fragrant herbs inside to ward off evil spirits. In ancient times, they were also a token of love that a girl would give to her beloved. /201610/471433

When writing for the weddings pages of The New York Times — which I have done since 1992, at first on a weekly basis and now occasionally — the job is to walk into a room full of well-dressed strangers and collect the best descriptions you can find about love and marriage, mostly love. It isn’t easy. For one thing, people sense a stranger in their midst as acutely as a herd of gazelles might, and they tend to scatter, or stare from a distance in a menacing way. Over the years, I have filled many spiral notebooks with ations. On the subject of love, clichés are hard to avoid. I have heard, “They/we are like two pieces of a puzzle,” or “It was fate/bashert/kismet/meant to be” thousands of times, or that’s how it feels anyway. Occasionally, though, people say something original and sparkly about love, and as a reporter, I want to hug them. It’s like finding a diamond in the sand. As a sort of thank-you to all of those whom I have written about, and those whom I have written for, here are 10 of those jewels:这些年来,我在一大摞螺旋线圈本上记下了很多引语。 1. “In a sense, the person we marry is a stranger about whom we have a magnificent hunch.” This is my all-time favorite ation about marriage, spoken during a 1992 wedding in a small, unheated chapel in Cold Spring, N.Y., and sourced from the 1991 book “Weddings From the Heart” by Daphne Rose Kingma. In its own way, the ation also explains a lot about divorce.1. 2. This remark, from a Vows column about the 1995 wedding of Elizabeth Burbank and LaMott Britto, describes how it feels to finally find a partner: “I’ve always felt like a fish out of water, and when I met LaMott it was like he was the same fish.”2. 3. According to Stacy Cor, who became engaged to Dan Polner 10 days after they met on an airplane in 1993, examination should not be necessary to determine if love is real. “When you know you know, and don’t believe it any other way,” she said. “When someone asks you to marry them, you shouldn’t have to make a list of pros and cons. You just know. You jump into their arms and say, ‘Yeah!’”3. For some, “knowing” is not so obvious. This is how Patricia Durkin knew Kenneth Wignall, whom she would marry in 1995, was right for her: “One night, a moth was flying around a light bulb and he caught it and let it out the window. I said: ‘That’s it. He’s the guy.’” This ation also speaks to the fruitlessness of trying to impress someone with a certain look, attribute, political affiliation or apartment décor. The things that spark attention and interest are often mysteries, even to ourselves. So throw out the list.4. 5. When brides and grooms describe their first or second meetings, they often say they feel as if they have known each other forever, possibly even in former lives. “I feel like Sean and I have known each other since the beginning of time,” Meghan Milewski said of Sean Yeaton, whom she married in 2013. “I always tell him, ‘After we die, we have to find each other in our next life.’ I also tell him if I die before him, I really want him to fall in love again. But in our next lifetime, he has to find me, not her. That’s the deal.”5. 6. Sometimes, you only learn what love is by breaking up. Before Eames Yates and Pamela Taylor were married in 2006 in Snowmass, Colo., they separated for a period of time that was especially excruciating for Mr. Yates. It was also illuminating: “I now know what love is,” he said. “It’s when someone becomes part of every breath, in what way I do not know. But I couldn’t breathe without her.”6. 7. Billboards and big diamonds are not necessary for proposals to be romantic. This is how Gabriela Power Porto described the marriage proposal Peter Castaldi put forth, more than two decades ago, one of the sweetest I ever heard: “When he gave me the ring, he said: ‘It’s not a big stone you can’t carry around. This ring won’t put you in danger on the subways.’ He said, ‘This is a solid ring, like my promises.’”7. 8. How should you feel on your wedding day? There are no rules, but this is how Ryan Baker described the day of his 1995 wedding to Brett Savage: “It was like a dream. It was surreal. In life, you don’t have to search for bad things — they find you without a problem. Disasters always seem to know your address, even if you move. But the good times, they’re hard to find, and this one was one of those truly spectacular times.”8. 9. Of all the homemade vows I’ve heard, one spoken by Melissa Richard during her 1996 wedding to Frank J. Oteri sums up the reason we continue to marry, against the odds: “Of my own accord, I present myself, my days, my nights and my life. I present them freely and willingly because they cannot be better spent than in your company.” More than a few couples I’ve interviewed have described love as a good conversation that lasts.9. 10. However, nothing lasts forever (unless you believe in reincarnation). The Rev. William G. Kalaidjian, who was known as Reverend Bill and died in 2015, was the officiant at one of the first weddings I covered, in 1992. He lived in a house full of noisy clocks. “I like to hear the tick, tick, tick of clocks,” he said. “I always tell the couples I marry, ‘Take time before time takes you.’”10. /201703/497258

Forget fitness trackers and fitness apps. Researchers say the augmented reality game Pokemon Go could have added 2.83 million years of life expectancy by simply getting people off the couch to hunt for virtual monsters. The study was done by Microsoft Research and found that Pokemon Go players, on average, increased the number of steps they took by 26 percent, with the most sedentary benefiting the most. Looked at another way, that#39;s 194 more steps per day taken, or roughly 160 meters. When totaled, researchers said cumulatively, the roughly 25 million Pokemon Go-playing Americans took 144 billion more steps or the equivalent of 143 round trips to the moon. Activity increases were seen among genders, ages, weight and general levels of health. The researchers say that since activity lowers mortality, all the extra activity from Pokemon Go could mean 2.83 million more years of life expectancy. Players who take 1,000 steps per day could lengthen their lives by 41.4 days. The one downside of the study is that interest in the game appeared to have peaked in the summer. Less interest and colder weather could reduce the number of players sharply. /201610/473048
