No ,snail. Anyway,so it was like an inch away from me. I almost stepped on that snail. And thats the scary part. And then literally,it stopped me in my tracks. There I was a Hollywood glamour queen in a big rush to get home. And theres a creature just trying to cross the parking lot. And it was going like, you know,at a ...snails pace, and yes, which i totally get now. And as silly as it sounds,It was the perfect reminder that we all need to slow down. It was a slimy disgusting reminder. But still,we are always in a rush, going from home to work and work to dinner and dinner to disco tax. And me,being in a rush, almost ended this poor snails life. I mean,he was probably trying to get home to his snail family. And his snail kids are waiting at the door, when is daddy coming home? When is daddy coming home? And the snail wife is probably in the kitchen, making some type of risotto, which to me is very bland. But thats what she wants to make.Let her make it. Anyway, every night she is trying to make something special. And at this point ,she wonders why, cause by the time everybody sits down to eat. Half the family is texting on their shell phones.Anyway, back to the story. Here comes the twist. So there I was in the parking lot. Looking down at the snail. He was scared,he was tucked into his shell, try to protect himself. So I bent down slowly to pick him upand to move him to safety. And thats when i realized it was a rock.Thats the twist. But to focus on that would be getting away from the point,费了那么多心思 其实是想告诉大家the point is we need to slow down.We need to see what we are doing affects everything around us. We need to pay attention to all the beauty in the world,Whether its a snail or a rock. And this now is the part where I dance.

Finance and Economics;Wall Street deregulation; The pendulum swings;财经;华尔街的去监管化; 逆势而变(钟摆移位);The “JOBS” act turns into a battle about Americas capital markets. For a brief moment, it appeared that Americans fractious politicians and capital markets were all in agreement. House Bill 3606, unofficially referred to as the JOBS act and officially (stretching out the acronym) known as the “Jumpstart Our Business Start-up Act”, sailed through the House of Representatives by 390 votes to 23 on March 8th. It was on its way to a similar endorsement in the Senate when the unthinkable seems to have happened: someone bothered to the law. There they found a set of provisions that, depending on your point of view, either open the airways of asphyxiated financial markets or give free rein to rapacious companies and banks. Over the past decade, Congress and aggressive prosecutors—notably New Yorks former attorney-general, Eliot Spitzer—have responded to various upheavals on Wall Street, including the dotcom bubble, the collapse of Enron and the financial crisis, by imposing extensive regulations. Whether these rules protected investors or improved overall market efficiency is a subject for debate. But they have definitely coincided with a period when the number of public companies in America has dropped in both absolute terms and relative to other countries. Critics charge that the rules have been devastating to the ability of entrepreneurial firms to access funding on public markets. The JOBS act—or the House version of it, at least—is packed with provisions to reverse the regulatory tide. It allows “emerging growth companies” with under billion in revenue, hardly small change, to skip various reporting requirements and internal audits. It amends accounting rules. It loosens compensation constraints. And it allows limited online “crowdfunding” by equity investors who are not designated as “sophisticated” (shorthand for being rich). The law also provides protection against often intrusive state regulations and reduces the restrictions on underwriters using public offerings to fund research. Democrats have belatedly woken up to the acts radicalism. The proposals support at first extended to the White House, which has since pulled back and demanded revisions. Opponents have become more vocal: trade unions, professors, regulators and others have lined up to criticise it. On March 20th, Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, voiced scepticism over the link between the JOBS act and job creation. To survive, the bill must pass a vote in the Senate due to take place after The Economist had gone to press and then, harder still, win a presidential signature. The bill is not perfect. A weakening of rules that require the broad dissemination of corporate information, rather than merely to the wealthy and connected, is its biggest flaw. But the pendulum of capital-markets regulation in America has swung in one direction for so long that when it started to reverse course, it was bound to do so with a vengeance.

Finance, not economics, may explain coppers recent plunge金融市场而非经济状况造成了近期的铜价下滑THE copper price has long been held to signal the state of the global economy as reliably as the metal conducts electrons. But that reputation—never fully deserved—is now in tatters. Coppers plunging price says a lot about China, but little about the rest of the world. China consumes about 40% of global copper production. But not all of that goes straight into manufacturing or construction. Chinese companies have also been using copper as collateral for their hard-currency loans: “buy, store, hedge and pledge” in the words of one trader. That has led to an overhang, with far more of the metal stockpiled than users need. Any change in the conditions that created this stockpile can have a big effect on the price. A sign of this is that when the Chinese economy slows, as seems to be happening now, with manufacturing activity weakening for a fifth consecutive month, those stockpiles rise. CRU, a metals researcher, now says the copper-market surplus this year will be four times bigger than it previously estimated, with forecast production outpacing demand by 140,000 tonnes. Chinese data are notoriously opaque, so judging the real health of the countrys copper-consuming industries is hard. A rebound in growth later this year could revive demand for the metal. But other factors are piling pressure on to the copper price. One is a growing wariness among creditors, following a corporate-bond failure this month. As banks worry about their customers abilities to service debts, Chinese firms are finding it harder to get loans. This is making some sell their copper to raise cash. Another factor is that Chinese regulators are cracking down on companies using copper stockpiles for speculation. Joel Crane of Morgan Stanley, an investment bank, argues that the authorities are targeting the “shadow-banking network” used by companies to evade controls on hard-currency lending. Chinese importers have long used letters of credit issued by banks for raw-material imports as a way of raising funds which they then use for other purposes. Such shadow banking created lucrative arbitrage possibilities for those able to take advantage of the difference between local and international interest rates. This is a useful dodge when times are good, not so when scrutiny increases. A reform in mid-2013 made companies holding copper for collateral keep it onshore, rather than in bonded warehouses, raising the cost of storage.2013年中的一次改革要求持有铜作为抵押品的公司将铜保存在大陆地区,而非保税仓库,这也增加了储存的成本。A similar story seems to be unfolding with iron ore. China accounts for half of world steel production, so the iron-ore price is hypersensitive to any downward flicker in demand. Iron-ore stocks at Chinese ports are at record highs. China is also trying to substitute its own, lower-quality ore for the higher-grade imported stuff. It wants to cut overcapacity and pollution, including using the financial markets to put pressure on the steel industry through higher interest rates and tighter credit. Companies who used iron ore as collateral for their borrowing may now have to use it for debt repayments instead. Copper bears fear that this could easily get out of hand. But the likelihood is more a slow unwinding of positions than a crash. Goldman Sachs, another bank, notes that it is not in the Chinese authorities interest to shut down commodity-financing deals altogether. It makes more sense just to increase the hedging and storage costs of those firms using commodities to speculate. Stephen Briggs of BNP Paribas, also a bank, notes that the “few hundred thousand tonnes” involved in these deals is only a small part of a 20m tonne market. The truth may be that jitters in China have just accelerated a change in perceptions about copper: from chronic deficit to surplus. This stems from the impending extra metal coming this year and next from new mines in places such as Mongolia, Peru and Mexico. Speculators may come and go, but at least copper, unlike gold, has a comfortably wide range of uses. /201404/285007 Business商业报道British lawyers in Dubai英国律师在迪拜Money for old laws旧法律世界新钱途New international courts in Dubai are giving British legal firms a boost迪拜的新国际法院给英国律所新的增长点WHEN the ed Arab Emirates gained its independence from Britain in 1971, little did it expect a second wave of colonialists: British lawyers. Clifford Chance, a London-based legal giant, opened a small office in Dubai in 1975 as it began to emerge as a commercial centre. Allen amp; Overy followed in 1978.1978年Allen amp; Overy紧跟着开了办事处。As Dubai boomed, lawyers from Britain and other countries flooded in, soon crowding its legal market. A new type of court may yet give British legal minds an advantage over both local lawyers and foreign rivals. Hoping to become the Middle Easts legal hub, in 2011 Dubai International Financial Centre threw open its courts to disputes from any country, provided both parties agree to be bound by its decisions. The attraction is that the courts use the English language and operate in public under English-style common law. This makes the legal process more transparent and much less risky for Western firms, which are put off by the reputation of Dubais local civil-law courts for favouring Emiratis over foreigners, according to Will Buckby at Beale amp; Company, a law firm. British firms aly appear to be benefiting. Since 2011 British lawyers in Dubai say they have been inundated by requests to draw up commercial contracts stating disputes have to be resolved in the DIFC courtrooms. More new work has been generated since the courts opened up. In their first year after the change, the value of disputed contracts under their consideration increased by 400%. 400%。And as a forum for arbitration, the DIFC courts are doing well. Around 95% of cases are resolved before they are heard formally. Inspired by the DIFCs success, Qatar has aly opened its own international courts. Abu Dhabi plans to follow suit next year. And Saudi Arabia has in the past expressed interest in setting up a private arbitration court in London. British lawyers are well placed to take advantage of this trend towards international courts. It is handy that the courts speak their language and use their law. And many of the judges have an English legal background. Not only have big firms such as Allen amp; Overy expanded operations in Dubai; smaller firms are rushing to set up offices there too. More than 30 are now based in the DIFC area alone. English law is likely to remain first choice for commercial contracts in the Middle East. Unlike civil-code systems, English law evolves through case law to stay more up to date with the wider world. For instance, recent rulings loosening the requirements for foreign companies wanting to liquidate themselves in English courts have boosted the use of some parts of corporate law. British law firms will also benefit from Dubais resurgent finance and construction sectors. Well over half of all financing agreements in Dubai are aly written using English law. A more serious threat to British legal firms would be if American law firms start to outcompete them, according to James Martin, a lawyer at Linklaters based in Dubai until recently. Some American law firms, such as Cleary Gottlieb, have started to expand in the Middle East, and more will surely do the same. There is a strong case to be made that British firms are leading the way in the Gulf, but the jury is out on whether they can stay ahead for the long haul.
