Believe it or not, astrobiologist Penny Boston is searching for life on Mars by dropping deep into this heart of darkness. This is a lava tube, a subterranean cave formed by underground lava flows during volcanic eruptions that occurred thousands of years ago. And Boston has someone she wants us to meet. Sometimes they are in crevices. Sometimes they are kinda hard to see. Is this one, the scary monster reveals itself? Ah! There is one. Actually no. This is an extremophile. We are looking for what we astrobiologyists call extremophiles in this environment. That means that they are organisms that are living in very difficult conditions. In this particular case, these organisms are living in a very cold cave right around freezing. They are making their living without benefit of sunlight and there is almost nothing to eat in this cave. In recent years, scientists have discovered tenacious microorganisms living in all forms of extreme environments. So if on Earth, why not on Mars? We think that Mars is covered with lava tubes. We believe that by looking at organisms that live in these extreme circumstances on Earth, we can learn a lot about what to look for on Mars; and that, similar Martian organisms may be able to persist on Mars in places very similar to this lava tube. To find out, Dr. Boston has created her own little Mars environment biospheres, essentially exposing a range of microscopic Earth life forms to various elements to be expected on Mars. They have been subjected to Mars-like levels of high ultraviolet radiation, and Mars-like temperature cycles. We have given them atmosphere compositions from very low levels of carbon dioxide with nothing else to, perhaps, 1/10 the density of Earth's atmosphere, and tested them under those conditions. And so far, she's isolated 36 different strains of organism that thrive quite happily. So in theory at least, life could survive the harsh conditions of Mars except for one problem. There is one thing for sure that we know, and that is that all forms of life on our planet require liquid water. We don't know if that's going to be true on other planets. But we think that where there is going to be life, there is going to have to be water.

What some restaurants tout as "specials," the food police call "toxic" for their salt content. What we found was shocking, even for people like me who've been immersed in this issue for 30 years. The non-profit Center for Science in the Public Interest, a health advocacy group, tracked meals at chain restaurants, finding some contained more than three times the amount of salt that's recommended on a daily basis. The Red Lobster Admiral's Feast of lobster, mashed potato, ceasar salad, a biscuit and lemonade totaled just over 7,000 milligrams of salt. Chili's Buffalo Chicken Fajitas, with tortillas, condiments and a Dr. Pepper, almost 7,000. Olive Garden's Tour of Italy Lasagna with a b stick, family size garden salad and dressing and a Coca-Cola? Over 6,000 milligrams. And the report targets kids' s. The Red Lobster chicken fingers with a biscuit, fries and raspberry Salt is pretty dangerous, because it can lead to high blood pressure which leads to heart attack and stroke, and it also can worsen the condition of people who have heart failure. The American Heart Association recommends adults have less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, which amounts to a teaspoon. For African-Americans, middle aged and older adults and people with high blood pressure, the recommended limit is 1,500 milligrams.Red Lobster, Olive Garden and Chili's did not dispute the findings, but told CNN they offer options to people watching calories and sodium intake. A restaurant trade group supports listing nutritional information, and says restaurants have been cutting sodium levels. We need to recognize that people go to restaurants for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, it's for convenience. Sometimes, it's an occasional indulgence, and it's not something they would consume every day.05/69919

India Launches First Unmanned Mission to Moon印度22日头一次发射探月太空船 India has launched its first unmanned mission to the Moon. The mission is a major boost to the country's space program, as India joins Asian nations China and Japan in exploring the Moon. The unmanned Chandayaan-1 spacecraft blasted off from a launch pad in Sriharikota in southern India, shortly after dawn, Wednesday, as the nation watched on television. Scientists applauded and hugged each other. The head of the Indian Space Research Organization, G. Madhavan Nair, calls it a perfect launch and says everything is going according to plan. It's a historic moment, as far as India is concerned…..We have started our journey to the Moon and the first leg of the journey has gone perfectly well," said Nair. "It's a remarkable performance by the launch vehicle, every parameter was on the dot….Today what we have started is a remarkable journey for the Indian spacecraft to go to the Moon and try to unravel the mysteries of the Moon." It was clearly a moment of celebration for scientists in charge of the mission. This is the beginning of a new era…..Words don't come, OK…..today it is a red-letter day…our baby is on the way to the moon," one scientist could be heard saying. The Chandrayaan-I, which means Moon Vehicle, is being sent on a two-year mission to orbit the Moon and scan its chemical and mineral composition. India has formally demanded strong action from Pakistan against those behind the terror attacks in Mumbai. The attacks have heightened tensions between the South Asia nuclear-armed rivals after India accused Pakistan-based militants of carrying out the terror strikes. The Indian foreign ministry summoned Pakistan's envoy in New Delhi, Shahid Malik, Monday to inform him that last week's terrorist attacks in Mumbai were carried out by "elements from Pakistan." New Delhi told Pakistan's ambassador that it wants strong action against those responsible. About 10 to 15 heavily armed gunmen attacked different targets across India's business hub last week, killing and wounding hundreds of people. Pakistan has denied any involvement by its state agencies and vowed to cooperate in the investigation. India's junior foreign minister Anand Sharma has called the attacks a setback to the process of normalization of relations between the two countries. In what I can say was an assault on the dignity of the Indian nation state came from outside India and there are Pakistani links which are very clear and elements from Pakistan and forces and groups from there," he said. The accusations by India have fueled fears of a sharp deterioration in relations between the two countries, and the possibility of heightened tensions along their borders. However, a strategic analyst at New Delhi's Center for Policy Research, Bharat Karnad, said New Delhi is unlikely to do what it did following a deadly assault on its parliament by Pakistan-based militant groups in 2001 when it massed troops along its border, bringing the two countries to the brink of war. "I doubt very much whether this government has the will to get into a punitive mode, and order any kind of military counteraction or something of the kind. That won't happen. But yes relations are in tatters for the moment and that will be the case for a while now," he said.Pakistan has aly indicated that if tensions with India escalate, it may move troops from its Afghan border to the Indian border. U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice is expected to discuss the terror attacks during a visit to India on Wednesday. India and Pakistan have fought three wars since their independence from Britain. President Bush says the ongoing financial crisis has forced him to endorse aggressive government intervention in numerous economic sectors in spite of his core, free market principles. President Bush restated his desire to prevent the U.S. auto industry from going bankrupt, while stressing that federal intervention should be temporary. President Bush came into office eight years ago with an agenda of low taxes and limited government. But, in a wide ranging discussion in Washington, Mr. Bush admitted that the economic meltdown of the last year has forced him to set some of those principles aside. The latest example is a rescue package the administration is contemplating for troubled U.S. automakers. An earlier attempt at a rescue plan passed the U.S. House of Representatives, but the measure failed in the Senate. Mr. Bush noted that the U.S. auto industry employs millions of people, and that it is on the brink of collapse. "I am worried about a disorderly bankruptcy and what it would do to the psychology and the markets," he said. Mr. Bush said he intends to act, but has yet to decide how best to do so. Earlier this year, Congress approved a 0-billion financial rescue package. Mr. Bush said he disliked the idea of such massive government expenditure and intervention, but that he had been warned of a possible economic catastrophe worse than the Great Depression if no action were taken. The president was speaking at a gathering of the free market policy organization, the American Enterprise Institute. He was asked to respond to accusations from Democrats that his economic agenda sowed the seeds of the financial crisis. I'm looking forward to the true history of this financial crisis being written," said Mr.Bush. "No question part of the crisis came about because of excesses in lending in the housing market. My administration early on expressed concern about implicit government guarantees in the mortgage industry, in Fannie and Freddie." Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are government-sponsored mortgage insurers that have benefited from the financial rescue package. Mr. Bush added that he understands the frustrations of ordinary Americans whose tax dollars are propping up corporations because of what he described as the "excesses on Wall Street." The president, whose term ends next month, also expressed disappointment that free trade pacts with Colombia and Panama have not been ratified during his time in office. 200812/59197

New research reinforces the importance of prenatal iron supplementation for good birth outcomes and continued good health for growing children. Studies over the past 20 years have pointed to the importance of micronutrients - substances found in small amounts in foods that make a big difference. One of the most important micronutrients for pregnant women is iron. Iron is vital to the development of a fetus' central nervous system, says Parul Christian, a nutritionist working at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Early iron deficiency can change the neuro-anatomy of the brain, and impact the neuro-chemistry of the central nervous system and brain metabolism, that are important for cognitive development, for sensory-motor development." But providing vitamin and micronutrient supplements to all pregnant women can be a significant financial burden in low income countries. Some experts argue that it's enough to give infants iron supplements after they're born. That was part of the reason Christian and her colleagues decided to study poor women in Nepal a decade ago. Some of the women got supplements without iron and folic acid, another important micronutrient, while others got supplements with both micronutrients. 201101/122808Every week, more children arrive to work in the hundreds of primitive mines in the bush. Here they endure long hours at dangerous jobs, wringing flecks of gold from the dirt with mercury. One of them is a 12-year-old boy named Saliou. Momodou is just 13 years old. This is a region of Africa where boys of Saliou's age are expected to earn money for their families. He works in a bush mine on the Senegal-Mali border in the village of Tenkoto. Senegal prohibits anyone under 18 from doing hazardous work. And mining is among the most hazardous of jobs. According to the UN, mining is one of the worst forms of child labor. However, the laws are seldom enforced. Children travel from mine to mine, moving with the gold. The AP reports that 6 months after Saliou arrived in Tenkoto, it was decided that the mine was nearly depleted. So he and the boys walked for more than a week, crossed the Senegal border and arrived at another mine in Mali. It's the same story here as at the mine in Tenkoto. Teenage boys clamber down mine shafts 30 to 50 meters deep. Younger teens then yank the rocks up with a pulley. Squatting next to a plastic tub, boys of school age pour mercury onto their bare hands. Mercury attracts gold like a magnet. The World Health Organization says that mercury is a potent nerve toxin and can affect the brain. It's especially dangerous for children since their nervous systems are still developing. Typical symptoms of mercury poisoning include mental retardation, loss of balance, tremors, blindness and loss of hearing. “In addition to the actual work that they do is that they carry very heavy loads, they are exposed to chemicals like mercury which cause extreme danger to them, which pose an extreme danger to the nervous system, kidneys, the respiratory system, reproductive system.” Once the tiny flecks of gold have been extracted, the buyers step in offering roughly per gram. Once the deals are done, the gold is taken to the capital of Mali. Here the price for gold from Tenkoto is almost a gram, nearly more than the buyers pay the miners. ed Nations mining experts estimate that 10-20% of the thousands of mine workers in West Africa are children. “Frankly, it's a, it's a very serious problem. We estimate about one million children worldwide are involved in small-scale mining.” Precisely which products contain child-mined gold, no one can say for sure. Unlike a diamond, gold does not keep its identity on its tortuous journey from mine to market. The AP reports one prominent retailer, Tiffany amp; Company, has expressed concern about child labor and frustration that it can't certify its products are free of gold mined by youngsters. Because bush mines, where child labor is ubiquitous, supply a fifth of the world's gold according to the UN, the company realizes its supply lines may well be compromised. Tiffany amp; Company is part of the Council for Responsible Jewellery Practices which was formed to seek ways to help reduce the market for gold mined by children. But the council has found no effective way to enforce compliance. For Saliou, the work in the mines goes on. He says he dreams that one day he'll own something made of gold. A look at how Japan views the sea—and itself日本之自身观amp;海洋观解读Jun 2nd 2011 | from the print editionAT AROUND the age of 70, Katsushika Hokusai, still bounding with artistic energy, created “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”, a series of ukiyo-e, or woodblock prints. His most famous, since reproduced on everything from Tintin books to tea cups, is “Beneath the Wave off Kanagawa”, painted around 1830. Most Westerners, when viewing it, focus on the wave itself, which towers over Mount Fuji in a show of almost implacable force, all the more terrifying considering the three fragile boats under it. Neil MacGregor, director of the British Museum, wrote in “A History of the World in 100 Objects” that the picture reflected frightened fishermen and an insecure, cloistered Japan about to be forced by American gunboats into the modern world. But Japanese art critics differ—and they have a point. In the picture the boatmen look more serene than fearful, as their vessels slice through the waves. Their stillness in the face of danger is all the more poignant in Japan, as they have a job to do. They are racing to deliver fresh fish to market, and yet they remain, as far as many Japanese see it, in delicate balance with nature. 201106/139640

Katie Scott loooks at Sony's House of the Future at Grand Designs Live and Stuart Miles get a first look at the new HTC Touch Diamond and Audio Pro Porto. Hello and welcome to this latest episode of Megawhat. I’m Katie Scott. We’ve come down to Grand Designs Live in the center of London to get a glimpse of the gadgets of future in the British home. Stay tunes.Hello, and welcome to the Sony House of the Future which is the manufacturer's concept of the type of home we could all be living in in the future. So we are now looking at basically key efficiency and making it most out of facilities in your kitchen. This wok is absolutely amazing. First on my thought when I'm doing it, I was thinking actually I can’t believe, it's actually, happening in front of me. So what I’m gonna to do is gonna take some water from this bottle. This is just normal water. I’ll pour actually over my fingers. So you can see I’m not burning myself, yes, it’s actually cold. That’s a relief. And then what I ‘m gonna to do is, just lift the wok and then put it into, above De Dietrich cradle. And without seeing me out of the camera, what you're seeing now is that the steam coming off aly. The guy who did demo earlier said that this is so much more efficient than anything on the market in terms of electricity and gas. Look! The steam's coming out, but what is so, so incredible is when I actually lift this wok off now. Take it away. Then, it’s not hot ,you thought I was gonna burn myself then, and I didn’t .So that is the De Dietrich wok. Though I’m the most appalling cook, but this oven, I think, might actually save me; it's got the intelligent cooking system. So if I press OK, now it is just turning in. And what you can do, she can go up and down, and basically intelligent cooking system. So OK that. And then you can go up and down on the list, and basically pick what you gonna cook. So let’s pick roast beef medium because your mother-in-law is coming over, and you know you're gonna mess up. Press OK. And basically what it tells you now is how long it’s gonna take to cook, because it allows you to take a measurement of the hunk of meat that you put in that. And you all know its density so, you know, how to get it right, not this said you wants it medium, much parts are rare. And that saying 44 minutes, but say, she is not arriving until a bit later; you can actually change the time. So that your beef is y, exactly when she comes through the door, exactly when you’re giving her a glass of wine, and then you just present this perfectly cooked meal and smile and not mention the amazing cooking system you've got to store away in your kitchen. If you’ve yet to get an iPod dock from a thousand that are aly available and maybe this one might change your mind. It’s the Audio Pro Porto, and it's an iPod dock that comes with a handy carry handle, made from leather. Smells good! It comes in red and black and will cost you/ 180 quids. Speakers at the front promise plenty of sounds. As you can hear its nice, mellow-rounded tunes, and there's a couple of line-ins if you haven't got an iPod in the back. It also get a FM radio and of course the dock comes with a remote control as well as the ability to charge if it’s plugged in. All of that 180 pounds is available now.200812/59897It might be the cheeks flushing with embarrassment or a voice choking with emotion. Our physical reactions can reveal what we truly feel. And some think they can show when someone's lying.Typically when a person tells a lie, they begin to sweat. I'm sure we've all seen the 1940s and 50s interrogation movies where the person in the hot seat has a sweaty brow or a sweaty upper lip or perhaps sweat dripping down from their sideburns."All right, if you lean forward in the chair, put your arms up (in) front of you, like you're gonna dive into a swimming pool. Put this around your stomach. "Jack Trimarco uses physical sensations to probe for truth. His primary tool? The lie detector, or polygraph. "This cuff is just like the one of the doctor."Polygraph, its work's very similar to any other biofeedback instrument. It simply records deviations from a person's physiological norm, such as someone's blood pressure going up and then coming back down, or perhaps a decrease or an increase in pulse rate, or sweat pore activity."Are you sometimes known as Bobbie?""Yes."A polygraph examiner knows what to look for when questioning someone. "D o you intend to be completely truthful with me?""Yes." Any deviation from normal could signal deception. Our body can give us away. "And are you sure that I won't try to trick you on this test?""Yes." We may think we're being cool, but when we're stressed, our network of nerves starts to prepare our body for action as if it's under attack. It's a response that harks back to our ancient ancestors -- fight or flight. It starts by triggering your stress hormone -- adrenalin. Your heart rate increases to pump more blood to your muscles as if you were about to go into battle. Your breathing deepens as vital oxygen reaches your muscles. And you begin to sweat -- the body cools so that you won't overheat when rushed into action. The brain won't let us stop the survival strategy. These basic nervous functions are automatic. That's why a polygraph can often uncover a liar. 1. hot seat: (n., slang) 1. The electric chair used to cause death by electrocution in legal executions. (informal ) 2.A position in which you can easily get into trouble. e.g. A judge in a beauty contest is on the hot seat. 2. sideburns: pl.n.(复数名词)Growths of hair down the sides of a man's face in front of the ears, especially when worn with the rest of the beard shaved off. 3. hark back: To return to a previous point, as in a narrative. e.g. he keeps harking back to his music-hall days 4. adrenalin: [生化]肾上腺素5. rush sb into sth参考中文翻译:可能由于尴尬脸会变红,或者由于情绪激动声音会颤抖。 200811/57317

New York has legalized same sex marriage, making it the sixth U.S state to do so. Gay rights advocates call the vote a major victory in their quest for equality. The New York State Senate approved the legislation Friday night by a vote of 33 to 29, as four Republican lawmakers crossed party lines and voted in favor of the bill. Governor Andrew Cuomo, who had pushed for the bill, quickly signed the legislation into law meaning, pending court challenges, same sex couples can begin legally marrying in New York in 30 days. New York made a powerful statement, not just for the people of New York, but [also for] the people all across this nation. We reached a new level of social justice this evening," Cuomo said. New York could become a destination for same sex couples wanting to legally marry because the state has no residency requirement for obtaining a marriage license. 201106/142196。

Twice a year, day and night, fall into balance, lasting for nearly equal length. Known as equinoxes, Latin for equal night, they occur in March and September and along with solstices mark the changing of seasons as Earth travels around the sun. Astronomers like to describe the equinox within the conceptual celestial sphere. Here the heavens are projected around the Earth, like an enormous planetarium. The model is bisected by the celestial equator, a projection of Earth’s own equator. The equinox occurs at the point at which the sun’s path or ecliptic crosses the celestial equator. In spring it is known as the vernal equinox, and in fall the autumnal equinox. The other two seasonal points on the sun’s path are the two solstices; in the northern hemisphere, the summer solstice marks the longest day of the year, while the winter solstice marks the shortest. The seasonal aligning of the sun has been more than just a unique celestial event for humankind throughout history. Ancient sites like Stonehenge in England and Machu Picchu in Peru have well documented solar alignments during the solstices. Similarly, the equinoxes have been associated with some amazing man-made phenomena. In the ancient Maya city of Chichén Itzá, the great pyramid known as El Castillo is oriented along cardinal axis. During the equinoxes, shadows cast by the railings create the illusion of a writhing serpent body, descending the northern steps where it joins the carved serpent’s head at the base of the stairway. The cultural significance of the fall equinox and changing of seasons continues today, especially in the northern hemisphere, where the autumnal equinox occurs around harvest season. In fact, the full moon nearest the autumnal equinox is commonly referred to as the harvest moon. In China and other Asian countries, this time is celebrated with the mid-autumnal festival; the origins are linked to the birth of the moon goddess and festival traditions revolve around families with reunions and feasts and special moon cakes. In Jewish culture, thanks for the harvest is given during the week-long feast of the tabernacles or Sukkot. Families eat meals in temporary shelters outside, recalling the Israelites' days in the wilderness after the Exodus from Egypt.200810/52860

World Bank Raises Economic Forecast for China世界提高中国经济增长预测The World Bank says China's economy will grow faster than expected this year, but cautions it is too soon to say a sustained recovery is imminent. The World Bank raised its estimate of China's gross domestic product growth this year to 7.2 percent, up from the 6.5 percent projected in March. 7.2%。JumpstartIn its quarterly report released Thursday, the Washington-based lender credits China's 6 billion stimulus program with supporting growth by increasing investment in factories, real estate and public works. Jing Ulrich, the managing director and chairman of China equities for the investment bank JP Morgan in Hong Kong, says the stimulus program helped jumpstart the world's third-largest economy. Now, going forward, the most important thing to watch out for is whether the Chinese domestic consumption can hold up in the face of declining exports," she said. "We think domestic consumption is going to recover incrementally in the next few quarters, mainly because confidence is recovering very strongly in the Chinese economy."“现在,向前看,最需要密切关注的问题是,中国的内需是否能够顶住出口的下降。 Strong growthChina's economy grew 6.1 percent in the first quarter from the same time last year. That is the strongest rate of any major country, but below the government's target of 8 percent and far from 2007's explosive 13 percent. However, the World Bank cautions that more robust growth in China will have to wait until the global economy and demand for exports also rebound. It says China's trade and private investment will remain weak and consumption will slow. Ulrich says as the world economy recovers, China's exports also will recover. Clearly, that's the case. China is the second-largest exporter in the world and what happens in the regional economies, what's happening in the U.S. and Europe really matter a great deal to the Chinese economy," she added. "However, we also must keep in mind, the Chinese economy is fast. It's got 1.3 billion people. Domestic consumption and domestic fixed-asset investments are becoming much more important going forward."“很明显,中国是世界上第二大出口国。 The World Bank predicts China's growth in 2010 will rise to 7.7 percent. 06/75065
