The enchantment of magical places, from medieval castles to storybook gardens, inhabits fashion this season, as designers focus on the narratives of familiar legends and folklore. Chivalry reigns on, according to Mary Katrantzou, who incorporated regal, heraldic motifs in her fall collection (top center-left). Dolce amp; Gabbana (bottom left) borrowed from the stately robes worn by the fabled King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, as depicted in a 15th-century manuscript (top left). The princesses they fought for were evoked in ethereal white gowns at Alexander McQueen (bottom right); these maidens looked as if they could live at Neuschwanstein Castle (top right) in Bavaria, built in 1869 by the eccentric King Ludwig II. In tales and fables, thickets like the Dark Hedges in Ballymoney, Northern Ireland (bottom center), where “Game of Thrones” was filmed, are alive with fairy creatures of the kind sculpted by Janine Janet (top center-right) in 1957. Fairy tales are more compelling when based in reality. Since serving as the refectory of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies, the Great Hall of Christ Church (bottom center) has become the most visited site at the University of Oxford, and the Witch’s House (top center), built by the Hollywood art director Harry Oliver in 1921, is now a much-frequented landmark in Beverly Hills. For fall, Disney’s Snow White appeared on dresses at REDValentino (right) and at Alice and Olivia, where a model played the pale beauty in a crystal casket (left). Schiaparelli showed a dress embroidered with a bleeding heart (far right) while Dolce amp; Gabbana created a woodsy cape (center) and Undercover’s coronated models (far left) clutched electronic apples as if to ward off temptation. Fanciful spaces have often been realized by those who wished to occupy their own made-up worlds. One was the Prince Regent, who in 1815 employed John Nash to create the Indo-Saracenic pavilion (top left) in Brighton, England, as a riposte to the classicist architecture of the time. Tony Duquette’s Malibu Ranch (top center) was a latter-day equivalent: a city of pseudo-oriental architecture, in which one could easily dress in Anna Sui’s chinoiserie-inspired fall line (left). In a rural setting, Valentino’s gauzy frocks (both bottom right) might fit in Marie Antoinette’s 18th-century fantasy farm, L’Hameau de la Reine (bottom center), at Versailles. A truly quixotic landscape is seen in Salvador Dalí’s 1946 painting “The Temptation of St. Anthony” (top right), which depicts a metropolis set upon the backs of animals. The sandy hues in the exotic worlds conjured by Richard Selesnick and Nicholas Kahn in their narrative photo novellas (center) is echoed in Ralph Lauren’s majestic fall evening wear (center left). /201411/340976

Artificial sweeteners may disrupt the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, causing metabolic changes that can be a precursor to diabetes, researchers are reporting. That is “the very same condition that we often aim to prevent” by consuming sweeteners instead of sugar, said Dr. Eran Elinav, an immunologist at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, at a news conference to discuss the findings. The scientists performed a multitude of experiments, mostly on mice, to back up their assertion that the sweeteners alter the microbiome, the population of bacteria that is in the digestive system. The different mix of microbes, the researchers contend, changes the metabolism of glucose, causing levels to rise higher after eating and to decline more slowly than they otherwise would. The findings by Dr. Elinav and his collaborators in Israel, including Eran Segal, a professor of computer science and applied mathematics at Weizmann, are being published Wednesday by the journal Nature. Cathryn R. Nagler, a professor of pathology at the University of Chicago who was not involved with the research but did write an accompanying commentary in Nature, called the results “very compelling.” She noted that many conditions, including obesity and diabetes, had been linked to changes in the microbiome. “What the study suggests,” she said, “is we should step back and reassess our extensive use of artificial sweeteners.” Previous studies on the health effects of artificial sweeteners have come to conflicting and confusing findings. Some found that they were associated with weight loss; others found the exact opposite, that people who drank diet soda actually weighed more. Some found a correlation between artificial sweeteners and diabetes, but those findings were not entirely convincing: Those who switch to the products may aly be overweight and prone to the disease. While acknowledging that it is too early for broad or definitive conclusions, Dr. Elinav said he had aly changed his own behavior. “I’ve consumed very large amounts of coffee, and extensively used sweeteners, thinking like many other people that they are at least not harmful to me and perhaps even beneficial,” he said. “Given the surprising results that we got in our study, I made a personal preference to stop using them.“我喝很多很多的咖啡,大量使用甜味剂,和很多人一样,以为它们起码不会伤害我的身体,说不定还有好处,”他说。 “We don’t think the body of evidence that we present in humans is sufficient to change the current recommendations,” he continued. “But I would hope it would provoke a healthy discussion.”“我并不认为,我们提出的据足以修改目前的饮食建议,”他接着说。 In the initial set of experiments, the scientists added saccharin (the sweetener in the pink packets of Sweet’N Low), sucralose (the yellow packets of Splenda) or aspartame (the blue packets of Equal) to the drinking water of 10-week-old mice. Other mice drank plain water or water supplemented with glucose or with ordinary table sugar. After a week, there was little change in the mice who drank water or sugar water, but the group getting artificial sweeteners developed marked intolerance to glucose. Glucose intolerance, in which the body is less able to cope with large amounts of sugar, can lead to more serious illnesses like metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes. When the researchers treated the mice with antibiotics, killing much of the bacteria in the digestive system, the glucose intolerance went away. At present, the scientists cannot explain how the sweeteners affect the bacteria or why the three different molecules of saccharin, aspartame and sucralose result in similar changes in the glucose metabolism. To further test their hypothesis that the change in glucose metabolism was caused by a change in bacteria, they performed another series of experiments, this time focusing just on saccharin. They took intestinal bacteria from mice who had drank saccharin-laced water and injected them in mice that had never been exposed any saccharin. Those mice developed the same glucose intolerance. And DNA sequencing showed that saccharin had markedly changed the variety of bacteria in the guts of the mice that consumed it. Next, the researchers turned to a study they were conducting to track the effects of nutrition and gut bacteria on people’s long-term health. For 381 nondiabetic participants in the study, the researchers found a correlation between the reported use of any kind of artificial sweeteners and signs of glucose intolerance. In addition, the gut bacteria of those who used artificial sweeteners were different from those who did not. Finally, they recruited seven volunteers who normally did not use artificial sweeteners and over six days gave them the maximum amount of saccharin recommended by the ed States Food and Drug Administration. In four of the seven, blood-sugar levels were disrupted in the same way as in mice. Further, when they injected the human participants’ bacteria into the intestines of mice, the animals again developed glucose intolerance, suggesting that effect was the same in both mice and humans. “That experiment is compelling to me,” Dr. Nagler said.“我认为这个实验很令人信,”纳格勒士说。Intriguingly — “superstriking and interesting to us,” Dr. Segal said — the intestinal bacteria of the people who did experience effects were different from those who did not. This suggests that any effects of artificial sweeteners are not universal. It also suggests probiotics — medicines consisting of live bacteria — could be used to shift gut bacteria to a population that reversed the glucose intolerance. Dr. Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and immunology at the Harvard School of Public Health who did not take part in the study, called it interesting but far from conclusive and added that given the number of participants, “I think the validity of the human study is questionable.” The researchers said future research would examine aspartame and sucralose in detail as well as other alternative sweeteners like stevia. /201409/330376

It has long been said that a man with a good sense of humour can laugh a woman in to bed, despite his looks. Now researchers believe the opposite may also be true - that we also find attractive members of the opposite sex more amusing. Psychologists at the University of Stirling have discovered that good-looking people were perceived as funnier when the people listening to them could see what they looked like - i.e. whether they were attractive or not. In the study, undergraduate psychology students were ed while being asked which two items they would take to a desert island, and why. They could pick from either chocolate, hairspray or a plastic bag. While the students weren#39;t told that the study was about humour, the vast majority gave the appearance of trying to be funny in their answers. Other students were then asked to rate the desert-island comments for wit, as well as how attractive each of the commenters might be for a short-term or long-term relationship. The researchers found that attractive individuals were rated as funnier in clips than their less dashing counterparts. Funnier men were also considered most attractive for a fling, the researchers found. This might be because wit may give off the impression of not being serious or willing to commit to a long-term relationship. Being recorded on also made a real difference. Men who were ed were generally considered more amusing than those who only had their voices recorded and provided a photo of themselves. One theory is that men, in particular, use humour as a mating signal, to show-off their intelligence and good genes to women. Another is that we use wit to indicate we are sexually attracted to people. The study was published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences. /201403/279157。

It#39;s not often a tomato is described as so sweet #39;whenever people see it they just want to hug it#39; - but this was no ordinary piece of fruit. The heart-shaped tomato was grown by retired dagger maker, Rod Matless, who said he was shocked when he noticed it in his greenhouse while inspecting his latest produce. Mr Matless, 69, who suffered a heart attack a few years ago, was so taken aback by thephenomenal fruit that he decided to sell it at auction and donate the proceeds to the British Heart Foundation. The 2.26oz tomato was bought for #163;16 on eBay by a woman from Wales - who said she planned to give it to someone special. Mr Matless, of Wymondham, near Norwich, said: #39;It was a bit of an obvious thing to do I suppose. #39;I spent a couple of days thinking about it and I wasn#39;t really sure, but this seems like a good use.“虽然我想了好几天仍然不太确定,但还是觉得这样做应该不错。”#39;I hope it will do someone somewhere a bit of a good.#39;“我希望这颗番茄能给其他人带来好运。”He added: #39;It#39;s very sweet - whenever people see it they just want to hug it.#39;他补充说:“它看起来非常有爱,谁见到它都会想要拥抱它的。”But with the tomato#39;s freshness a key factor, enthusiastic gardener Mr Matless was up against the clock to deliver it to its new owner before rot set in. He said: #39;I didn#39;t want to send someone something horrible. I probably could have raised a bit more money with more time but I was worried about it. #39;It will certainly make a nice present for a loved one.I hope that they like it and I#39;m glad I got to help.#39;“而这颗心形番茄对有爱的人来说一定是个很好的礼物。 #39;It#39;s all been very good fun and I#39;ve really enjoyed growing this very special tomato.#39;“这件事情整个都令人很愉快,而且我真的很享受种植这颗心形番茄的过程。”The French once called tomatoes #39;pomme d#39;amour#39;, meaning love apple, but some say this is because they believed it was an aphrodisiac and had little to do with its shape. /201409/329852

Being bored can spur people’s creativity — partly to escape the horrible, frustrated, and meaningless feeling of boredom — recent studies find. It could even be true at work. Psychologists at the University of Central Lancashire had participants copy numbers out of the telephone book for 15 minutes, while others went straight into a standard creativity task (Mann amp; Cadman, 2013). (曼恩 amp; 卡德曼, 2013)Both groups were asked to come up with as many different uses as they could for a polystyrene cup. The group that were more bored came up with the most uses. Dr Sandi Mann, one of the study’s authors said:此篇研究文章的作者之一,桑迪-曼恩士说:“Boredom at work has always been seen as something to be eliminated, but perhaps we should be embracing it in order to enhance our creativity. What we want to do next is to see what the practical implications of this finding are. Do people who are bored at work become more creative in other areas of their work — or do they go home and write novels?”“工作中的无聊情绪经常是被看做不可取的,但为了提高创造力,或许我们应该接受它。 在工作中感到无聊的人会在其他领域更具有创造性吗?---或者说他们会回家写小说吗?”In a subsequent study they found that creativity was reduced when people were still bored but didn’t have the chance to daydream. The purpose of boredom无聊感的用途While we tend to think of boredom as something that inevitably leads to trouble — drinking, gambling, antisocial behaviour — this research suggests different possibilities. More than anything, the feeling of boredom is a strong signal that we are stuck in some kind of rut and we need to seek out new goals. In the study above, this search led participants to new ideas. Usually people will do anything to avoid being bored, as it’s such an aversive experience. But creative people, like writers, sometimes talk about seeking out boredom. Here is the comedy writer Graham Linehan talking about boredom to The Guardian:喜剧作家格雷厄姆-莱恩汉在对卫报谈起无聊时这样说道:“I have to use all these programs that cut off the internet, force me to be bored, because being bored is an essential part of writing, and the internet has made it very hard to be bored. The creative process requires a period of boredom, of being stuck. That’s actually a very uncomfortable period that a lot of people mistake for writer’s block, but it’s actually just part one of a long process.”“我会尝试各种办法远离网络,强迫自己感到无聊,因为无聊感是写作很重要的一部分,而网络使人很难感到无聊。 So, when you start to feel bored, instead of glancing at your smartphone, try being bored for a bit. Who knows what creative thought might come of it? /201406/307294

Lightly grease a 23cm square tin with a depth of about 5cm with a little sunflower oil and dust with the icing sugar and cornflour mix, tipping out and reserving the excess.1 将糖粉和玉米粉放进小碗中搅匀。 2 Measure 6 tablespoons of cold water into another small bowl, sprinkle over the gelatine and set aside.2 在另一个小碗里倒入6汤匙冷水,撒入明胶粉,放在一旁。3 Tip the sugar into a medium-sized pan, add 250ml water and the golden syrup and place the pan over a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the mixture to the boil and continue to cook steadily until the syrup reaches 120C/250F on a sugar thermometer. Remove from the heat, add the sponged gelatine and stir until thoroughly combined and the gelatine has melted.3 将糖倒入一个中等大小的平底锅,加入250毫升水和糖浆。 4 Place the egg whites in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment. Add a pinch of salt and whisk until the whites hold a stiff peak. Add the vanilla and the hot gelatine syrup in a steady stream and continue to whisk for a further 3–4 minutes, until the mixture will hold a ribbon trail when the beaters are lifted from the bowl.4 将蛋清放入带有搅蛋器的电动搅拌机。 5 Pour half the mixture into the prepared tin in an even layer. Add a tiny amount of pink food colouring paste to the remaining mixture and stir until evenly coloured. Pour the pink marshmallow over the white and leave to set (at least 2 hours).5 将其中的一半倒入准备好的听罐里,放在平台上。 6 Once the marshmallow has completely set, dust the work surface or a board with the remaining icing sugar and cornflour mixture. Carefully tip the marshmallow out on to the prepared board and cut into squares, using a sharp knife. Dust the individual marshmallows before packaging.6 待棉花糖完全冷却凝固,在面板上撒上剩余的糖粉和玉米粉。 7 Package in striped paper bags. Stored in an airtight box, the marshmallows will keep for 3 days.7 装入条状纸袋。 /201401/271235

A weird and scary were wolf like creture was caught on camera in the town of S?o Gon?alo de Campos, in the state of Bahia. The grainy 44-second clip emerged on YouTube after a spate of sightings of the terrifying cryptid in the town of S?o Gon?alo de Campos, near Feira de Santana, in the state of Bahia. The mysterious lupine was first spotted by a local man known only as Pingo. Pingo claims the creature ran at him but that he managed to escape by the narrowest of margins. He described the creature as a five foot tall black monster. At first people made fun of him but others have since had similar encounters with the beast, which they are calling a werewolf. In the wake of these sightings, government officials have put in place a 9pm curfew. /201402/277398
