Make a dent in something, It is very difficult to make a dent in credit card debt. I can't believe how much I missed. I've aly spent two days trying to catch up on the pile of paperwork on my desk. But I've barely made a dent in it. There's still a lot more I need to do. I'm usually rushing around in stores until the last minute, but this year is different. I'm really making a dent in my shopping list. Now I only have to pick up a few more presents and then I'll be y. It hasn't made a dent in it. 老师们终于帮助学生提高了考核的成绩 make a dent inBack when I was a child, bee life removed all the innocence,My father would lift me high and dance with my mother and me and thenSpin me around till I fell asleep. Then up the stairs he would carry meAnd I knew sure I was loved. If I could get another chance, another walk, another dance with him,I'd play a song that would never, ever end.How I'd love, love, loveTo dance with my father again. When I and my mother would disagreeTo get my way, I would run from her to him. He′d make me laugh just to comt me,Then finally make me do just what my mama said.Later that night when I was asleep,He left a dollar under my sheet,Never dreamed that he would be gone from me.If I could steal one final glance, one final step, one final dance with him,I'd play a song that would never, ever end,Cause I'd love, love, loveTo dance with my father again.Sometimes I'd listen outside her door,And I'd hear how my mother cried him.I pray her even more than me.I pray her even more than me.I know I'm praying much too much,But could you send back the only man she loved.I know you don't do it usuallyBut dear Lord she's dying. To dance with my father again,Every night I fall asleep and this is all I ever dream. 8536

Jet(黑色的)与jet(喷气式飞机)是否在词源上存有联系? Her hair is as black as jet(她的头发如黑玉一般乌黑发亮)(中国日报网站编译) black 飞机 世纪 表示

The auditorium is full of people conversing in the audience. On the stage the permers are shuffling their music and tuning their instruments as they prepare the permance. The conductor enters, takes a bow, and all is silent. He raises his baton and the symphony begins to play. All of the instruments have different sounds, and the parts they play blend and harmonize with one another. The music would not be as exciting if every part were the same. The symphony is a symbol life, especially in a commy. Diversity and the coming together of each instrument is what gives the symphony its unique and special sound. This is also true in life and the world we live in. Individuals bring in their own input that influences others. A symphony orchestra is composed of a variety of brass, woodwind, percussion and stringed instruments. Each of these instruments has its own unique sound but when played together they complement each other. Like a symphony and its instruments, the world is composed of many races and cultures. They are uniquely different but can have an influence on each other even if it is not intentional. If you are walking down the street, example, and move out of the way so as not to bump into someone, they are influencing your actions when you move inside. Individuality is an important part of the symphony. Each player has his or her own part to perm. These parts can be played on their own but do not have the same effect as when they are combined with the other parts of the orchestra. They blend into a harmonious piece of music. In other words, you can hear what each person has to contribute and how each permer works together. In life, each person has a talent that they are particularly good at. When they work together, it accentuates their talent. A surgeon can be very gifted but is more capable of saving a life if he has a team of medical personnel assisting him. In an essay called "The Gospel of Wealth," Andrew Carnegie discussed his views on wealth, the public good, and individualism. He described individualism as "a nobler ideal that man should labor, not himself alone, but in and a brotherhood of his fellows, and share with them all in common." Carnegie felt that individuality was important, but should not be taken so far that it separates everyone from each other. Each person should contribute their own ideas that better help the commy as a whole. Another similarity between life and the symphony is that a permer may not always have the melody but will accompany someone who does. Or in another case, a permer will not always have a solo and the chance to be in the spotlight. In life, everybody has their moments of glory although they may go unnoticed like the accompanist. This does not mean, however, that they are any less important than anyone else. The melody does not stay with one instrument the whole song but moves throughout the orchestra. As in life, everyone eventually has their moment to shine and their chance to be in the spotlight. When preparing a concert, the musicians are reminded by their conductor to stagger their breathing. They can, of course, breathe when they need to but they have to try not to breathe at the same time as the person sitting next to them. If everyone breathed at the same time, there would be a noticeable moment of silence in the song. This is yet another example that can be applied to life. People have to breathe when they need to breathe and to do what they want to do. They have to be an individual and know that someone will be there to cover them. The orchestra continues to play. It moves together as a group yet separately, with each person contributing their own part. Each musician is an active member of the symphony. We more together in life, contributing what we have to offer from day to day as active members in our commy. The orchestra plays their last note and the song is over. There is a moment of silence that is broken by the applause of the audience.。

Take a Loving Look How we see our partners often depends more on how we are than how they are.Husbands and wives are not audience, but participant observers in each other's lives. "Bee we were married, my husband was a caring, energetic man," a wife once told me. "He couldn't seem to keep his hands off me. Since we've been married, he's become a couch potato and watches ball games more than he watches me. He's gone from stud to spud." "Very funny," answered the husband. "But have you looked at yourself lately? When we got married, you were beautiful. Now you wear that old robe. If I've gone from stud to spud, then you've gone from doll to drudge." This hurtful, infantile argument illustrates how spouses, instead of looking love, may look flaws. It is a way of seeing. Author Judith Viorst once wrote,"Infatuation is when you think he's as gorgeous as Robert Redd, as pure as Solzhenitsyn, as funny as Woody Allen, as athletic as Jimmy Connors, and as smart as Albert Einstein. Love is when you realize he's as gorgeous as Woody Allen, as smart as Jimmy Connors, as funny as Solzhenitsyn, as athletic as Albert Einstenin, and nothing like Robert Redd in any category--but you'll take him anyway." This law of lasting love instructs us to look with instead of love. 019885

Inside inmation? A: Just give me the lowdown, and you'll be fine. B: I don't know anything, sir!I didn't have anything to do with that murder! A: Listen to me, boss. I thought I could handle it myself. I didn't know I would screw it up. B: I don't wanna hear that noise!Just tell me what you're gonna do right now. A: Does the chairman realize that our company's business is going downhill? B: I don't think so. I'm afraid he's still living in a fool's paradise. Double whammy 的英语解释是 two unpleasant situations or difficulties occurring at the same time"Whammy"这个词有"诅咒"或"致命打击"的意思"double whammy"就是指在同一时间内遭遇双重的打击或困难,如同中文里所讲的"祸不单行" A: Yesterday I had a real double whammy. My boss fired me, and my wife asked a divorce. B: Cheer up, man. Things are not as bad as you think.

Be Happy!“The days that make us happy make us wise.”----John Masefield when I first this line by England’s Poet Laureate, it startled me. What did Masefield mean? Without thinking about it much, I had always assumed that the opposite was true. But his sober assurance was arresting. I could not get it. Finally, I seemed to grasp his meaning and realized that here was a profound observation. The wisdom that happiness makes possible lies in clear perception, not fogged by anxiety nor dimmed by despair and boredom, and without the blind spots caused by fear.Active happiness---not mere satisfaction or contentment ---often comes suddenly, like an April shower or the unfolding of a bud. Then you discover what kind of wisdom has accompanied it. The grass is greener; bird songs are sweeter; the shortcomings of your friends are more understandable and more givable. Happiness is like a pair of eyeglasses correcting your spiritual vision. Nor are the insights of happiness limited to what is near around you. Unhappy, with your thoughts turned in upon your emotional woes, your vision is cut short as though by a wall. Happy, the wall crumbles. The long vista is there the seeing. The ground at your feet, the world about you----people, thoughts, emotions, pressures---are now fitted into the larger scene. Everything assumes a fairer proportion. And here is the beginning of wisdom. 6793

Relish the MomentTucked awayin our subconsciousness is anidyllicvision. We see ourselves on a long trip that spans the moment. We are traveling by train.Out the windows, wedrink inthe passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattlegrazingon a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn ad wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of cityskylinesand village halls. Butuppermostin our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour, we willpull intothe station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completedjigsawpuzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes loitering---waiting, waiting, waiting the station.“When we reach the station, that will be it!” we cry. “When I’m 18.” “When I buy a new 50SL Mercedes Benz!” “When I put the last kid through college.” “When I have paid off the mortgage!” “When I get a promotion.” “When I reach the age of retirement, I shall live happily ever after!” Sooner or later, we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and all. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us. It isn’t the burdens of today that drive men mad. It is the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today. So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, gobarefootmore often, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more, cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The station will come soon enough.

A light drizzle was falling as my sister Jill and I ran out of the Methodist Church, eager to get home and play with the presents that Santa had left us and our baby sister, Sharon. Across the street from the church was a Pan American gas station where the Greyhound bus stopped. It was closed Christmas, but I noticed a family standing outside the locked door, huddled under the narrow overhang in an attempt to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then got about them as I raced to keep up with Jill. Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off to our grandparents’ house our annual Christmas dinner. As we drove down the highway through town, I noticed that the family was still there, standing outside the closed gas station. My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turnoff my grandparents’ house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father U-turned in the middle of the road and said, “I can’t stand it!” “What?” asked my mother. “It's those people back there at the Pan Am, standing in the rain. They've got children. It's Christmas. I can’t stand it.” When my father pulled into the service station, I saw that there were five of them the parents and three children — two girls and a small boy. My father rolled down his window. “Merry Christmas,” he said. “Howdy,” the man replied. He was very tall and had to stoop slightly to peer into the car. Jill, Sharon, and I stared at the children, and they stared back at us. “You waiting on the bus?” my father asked. The man said that they were. They were going to Birmingham, where he had a brother and prospects of a job. “Well, that bus isn’t going to come along several hours, and you’re getting wet standing here. Winborn’s just a couple miles up the road. They’ve got a shed with a cover there, and some benches,” my father said. “Why don't y’all get in the car and I’ll run you up there.” The man thought about it a moment, and then he beckoned to his family. They climbed into the car. They had no luggage, only the clothes they were wearing. Once they settled in, my father looked back over his shoulder and asked the children if Santa had found them yet. Three glum faces mutely gave him his answer. “Well, I didn’t think so,” my father said, winking at my mother, “because when I saw Santa this morning, he told me that he was having trouble finding all, and he asked me if he could leave your toys at my house. We'll just go get them bee I take you to the bus stop.” All at once, the three children's faces lit up, and they began to bounce around in the back seat, laughing and chattering. When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door and straight to the toys that were sp out under our Christmas tree. One of the girls spied Jill’s doll and immediately hugged it to her breast. I remember that the little boy grabbed Sharon’s ball. And the other girl picked up something of mine. All this happened a long time ago, but the memory of it remains clear. That was the Christmas when my sisters and I learned the joy of making others happy. My mother noticed that the middle child was wearing a short-sleeved dress, so she gave the girl Jill’s only sweater to wear. My father invited them to join us at our grandparents’ Christmas dinner, but the parents refused. Even when we all tried to talk them into coming, they were firm in their decision. Back in the car, on the way to Winborn, my father asked the man if he had money bus fare. His brother had sent tickets, the man said. My father reached into his pocket and pulled out two dollars, which was all he had left until his next payday. He pressed the money into the man’s hand. The man tried to give it back, but my father insisted. “It’ll be late when you get to Birmingham, and these children will be hungry bee then. Take it. I’ve been broke bee, and I know what it’s like when you can’t feed your family.” We left them there at the bus stop in Winborn. As we drove away, I watched out the window as long as I could, looking back at the little gihugging her new doll. 7
