Once upon a time, there lived a rich man, but he didn't know any words. One day, one of his friends wanted to borrow an ox from him, so he wrote a note and asked his servant to take it to this rich man. After the servant gave the note to the rich man, he pretended to be ing it and after a while, he said, "OK, I know. Go and tell your master, I'll go myself shortly. Layoff stories like that are all too common. Managers often take a clinical approach when breaking the bad news, fearing they'll get sued if they say the wrong thing, or end up facing angry -- even violent -- employees. But being too cautious can make a boss seem downright heartless.Executive coaches say small-business owners in particular could use a lesson or two in easing the pain, since they often don't have human-resources specialists to help them out and they may go for long stretches without firing anyone. Here's some expert advice on how bosses can best express their regret over layoffs and leave their former employees with dignity and self-respect -- and maybe a little less anger.1 Say the right things.A manager should sit down in a private area and clearly tell the employees one on one that they are being let go and why, says Karen Lucas, a Chicago executive coach. Bosses who rarely have laid off employees before should rehearse what they will say, and even bring notes into the meeting, so they don't say the wrong things or forget something important. The basics: Be direct in telling people the company can no longer employ them and explain in detail the financial hardship causing the need for layoffs. And even if performance issues factored into your decision, tell the employees it's not their fault -- it's yours -- and that you've tried to avoid layoffs as much as you could.People feel better if "you're giving them a sense that this was not an easy decision but this was a decision that needed to be made," says Ms. Lucas. At the same time, refrain from talking about other employees' situations, which could raise questions of fairness. And don't bring up problems with an employee's performance if you haven't discussed them before. Stick to the point: Explain the financial circumstances that caused the need for layoffs. You should also give the employee time to react. Some people will be angry, some will cry and some will do nothing at all. But give them time to process what's happening and to ask the questions they need to ask. Also realize that they may not take in everything you say at such a tough time. So, Ms. Lucas and others recommend presenting laid-off employees with written materials explaining the terms of their layoff, including any severance or other benefits they qualify for.One final thing to remember: It's good to show sympathy and regret for the situation, but don't pretend you know how they feel, warns Leila Bulling Towne, a San Francisco executive coach. "Fact is, you don't know how they feel, because you're not getting laid off," she says. "Saying that will just make them feel worse."2 Help them move on.You can soften employees' pain over the job loss by helping them find their next job, especially now with the economy so bad. Present a list of possible resources for the terminated employee, such as job-placement experts or contacts at other companies hiring in your industry. Assuming they are solid performers, offer to give them a good recommendation and perhaps even reach out to acquaintances who you think may be hiring. It's also important to consider timing. Some managers prefer to handle layoffs on Friday afternoons, assuming that it gives everybody a chance to decompress. But Ms. Lucas recommends handling layoffs on a Tuesday or Wednesday, so people can immediately do something about their job situation, such as contact a career counselor or a prospective employer. Otherwise, they may just spend the weekend ruminating over the bad news.3 Allow for transition.Fearing retribution, some companies have security escort newly laid-off employees immediately to the door -- perhaps allowing them a short detour to their desks to collect belongings. Not only is this a major insult to employees who have worked hard, but it kills the morale of the employees who witness it. Unless there's valid reason to believe employees will act out, give them some time -- even a few weeks -- to announce their departure to colleagues and plan their next move.Paul Silvis, founder of Restek Corp., a chromatography company, says he has laid off about 60 employees over the years. He usually allows someone who has been laid off to stay on for up to a couple of months to give the person time to find a new job. He also says he does all he can to coach them and help them find a new position.Of course, he must trust the individual employees enough to think they'll act appropriately. And they're asked to sign a contract with some ground rules, such as promising they won't steal competitive information. But Mr. Silvis says the employees feel less like they're being kicked out the door. "The primary thing we try to do is let them leave with their self-esteem," he says. /200901/60603

In the end, Grammy voters came to their senses. While they zigged in a commercial direction, towards Lil' Wayne, in their nominations, they zagged back to the creativity of Alison Krauss and Robert Plant for the final, top prizes.True, the starry pair's album, "Raising Sand," might not have been a career-defining work - for either of them. But it had daring and a fine mood on its side. Before they twinned their voices for these rare songs, few listeners would have imagined bluegrass chanteuse Krauss and post-Zeppelin yowler Plant in the same city, let alone in the same studio. Yet they found a bracing mean in their mutual love of spooky folk.Going back to such Zep songs as 1971's "Gallow's Pole," Plant showed a keen interest in acoustic roots music.Obviously, Krauss has long worked her way around that territory.Never, though, had she mined the particular, spectral sound the two forged together, with key help from longtime Americana producer T-Bone Burnette. If "Raising Sand," and its shadowy songs, fully deserved to steal the headlines at last night's show, the precise categories it snagged weren't always on point. The album cut "Please Read the Letter" won for Record of the Year (a prize awarded for the sound and production of the piece), while Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" took the trinket for Song of the Year (a prize keyed to the composition). It should have been reversed. "Letter" has greater strength as a piece of songwriting, "Vida" more power as a shimmering production. Voters did themselves proud, however, in their choice of Best New Artist. The pleading vocals of Adele mine more emotion than any of the other candidates, with the possible exception of roiling Ramp;B singer Jazmine Sullivan. Certainly, the one-named British star deserved the nod over the country slickness of Lady Antebellum, the retro-fitted pop of Duffy, and the teen dream goofiness of the Jonas Brothers.Adele's song "Chasing Pavements" also richly deserved its place in the Best Female Pop Vocal slot. Another gratifying moment came with the Best Hard Rock Performance nod going to The Mars Volta. They're guitar-oriented music's most forward thinking band. Satisfying as well was Kings of Leon nabbing the gold in one of the wordiest categories: Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. You could quibble that the Kings' album actually rated as last year's best. But that's a minor carp.Considering the goofy list of nominations this year (with particular head-scratchers crowding the Song of the Year slot), it looks like, once again, the Grammys dodged their own bullet. /200902/62356

Some educational specialists point out the negative effect the Internet can bring to people, especially the young learners. 1. Computers in the classroom can raise educational standards. Educational specialists point out that there is no evidence to support this. Some even question whether it is a good idea to encourage young learners to have access to the Internet.2. Internet is a vast storehouse of valuable knowledge. Educational specialists describe the Internet as a medium that has no quality control(质量监控) because anyone can post anything on the Internet. No editors will test their contributions. It is like a library that contains works of both the talentless and the talented, a picture gallery that exhibits both great works of art and childish scribbles, a museum that contains rubbish as well as wonderful treasures.3. We should give young learners increased access to the Internet so that they can get a vast amount of materials. Educational specialists point out that this is a mixed blessing(好坏参半) because if the young learners are not educated to be discriminating (有辨别能力的), they may gain knowledge and genuine understanding, but at the same time they may be exposed to ignorance and foolishness as well. /200812/58751。

After Euro 2008, now Austria is preparing to host RoboCup, where 500 robots take to the football field hoping to prove their mettle.Held annually since 1997, the RoboCup, one of the world's largest demonstrations of robotics, will take place in the southern city of Graz in July 2009, organiser Gerald Steinbauer said."Robot-football is more than just entertainment. It is the ideal scenario for developing moving robots in a mobile environment," said Steinbauer, a robotics specialist at Graz Technical University. The 500 robots will be joined by 2,500 human players, with teams competing in four championships, depending on the size of robot.A fifth, completely virtual, competition runs alongside the four championships, with two teams of 11 players pitted against each other in a simulator.A more serious addition to the programme will test the efficiency of robots as potential life-savers in an earthquake scenario, Steinbauer added. On the sidelines of the tournament, international experts will give public lectures on the latest developments in robotics and artificial intelligence. /200809/49809Everyone wants to achieve beauty and health. Often we're told that we have to suffer now — give up what we want — in order to succeed later, that in order to save we must sacrifice. Give up instant gratification to get delayed gratification. But you can do both. For years, I was confused about this, as I books and websites that sent me two different messages:Pleasure later. The first message was that in order to be successful, in order to build wealth, you have to delay gratification. You can't have instant gratification and be successful.Pleasure now. The second message was usually from other sources on Happiness, but sometimes from the same source: enjoy life now, while you can, because it's short and you never know when your last day will come. Live every day like it's your last. Trouble is, I agree with both messages. And if you this site often, you’ll see that I send both messages: Live frugally and simply! But also enjoy life! That's because I've reconciled the two philosophies into one: Live life now and enjoy it to the fullest — without destroying your future. The key to doing that? Find ways to enjoy life completely, utterly, maximally … that don’t cost your future very much. Here are some tips for actually living that philosophy:Find free or cheap pleasures. Frugality does not have to be boring or restrictive … if you use your imagination. Be creative and find ways to have fun — loads of it — without spending much money. Have a picnic at the park, go to the beach, do crafts, board games, fly a kite, make art, bake cookies … I could list a hundred things, and you could come up with a few hundred more. Make a list of simple pleasures, and enjoy them to the maximum. This is the key to the whole idea of enjoying life now without spending tomorrow's dollar. See Savor the Little Things .Make simplifying fun. I'm a big fan of simplifying my life, from decluttering to creating a simple lifestyle in every way. And to me, this is great fun. I get rid of stuff (and possibly make money selling it) and have a blast doing it. That’s good math.Rediscover what’s important. Oftentimes we spend tons of money, shopping, going out, watching movies, eating out … without really enjoying life. And when we stop to think about it, we never have time for the things we really want to do. Well, that's probably because your life is filled with things that aren't very important to you. Instead, step back and really think about what’s important to you. Then get rid of the other (expensive) stuff, and focus on what's important. Listen to some stuff on my list: my wife and kids, other friends and family, ing, writing, exercising, volunteering, spending quiet time in contemplation. Guess how many of those things cost a lot of money? Read more here .Make people a priority. This is related to the above point, but I thought I'd give it a little more emphasis. If you give "stuff" a priority — stuff like gadgets, nice furnishings, nice clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc. — then you will spend a lot of money. But if you make people a priority — the people you love most, you close friends and family — you don't need to spend a dime to enjoy life. Make some time to visit with friends, or your parents … and have a conversation with them that doesn't involve eating out or going to the movies. Just sit, have some iced tea or hot cocoa (depending on the weather), and talk. Tell jokes and laugh your heads off. Talk about books you've , movies you’ve watched, new things going on in your life, your hopes and dreams. And make time for your kids or your significant other — really spend time with them, doing things that don't cost money. (See Spend Time with Family and Loved Ones , 100 Ways to Have Fun With Your Kids and 50 Ways to Be Romantic on the Cheap .)Find time for yourself. Make time every day, and every week, to spend time alone. It really gives more meaning and enjoyment to your life, rather than rushing through life with no time to think, to breathe. For ideas on how to make this time, see these ways to create time for solitude .Sometimes, splurge. You shouldn't restrict yourself from expensive pleasures all the time — it's not good to develop the feeling of deprivation. To prevent that, once in awhile, buy yourself something … or better yet, give yourself a decadent treat. I love things with dark chocolate or berries. Crepes with ice cream and berries are one of my favorites. Just don't go overboard … and learn to enjoy the splurge to the fullest. If you truly take the time to enjoy a treat, you don't need a lot of it.Track your successes. It doesn't really matter how you track your success … you can use gold stars for creating a new simplifying or frugalfying habit, or a spsheet chart to track your decreasing debt and increasing savings or investments. Tracking is a great way to not only provide motivation, but make the process of changing fun.Reward yourself. And in order to make it more fun, celebrate every little success! Set rewards for yourself (hopefully not too expensive!) along your path to success — celebrate one day, two days, three days, a week, two weeks, three, a month … you get the idea.Volunteer. One of the most rewarding things for my family has been when we have managed to volunteer. It's actually something we only started doing last year, but since then, we've done it a bunch of times in a number of different ways. And while it doesn't cost a dime, it is tremendously satisfying in ways that money could never buy. Read more .Live in the moment. Learn to think not so much about the past or future, but about what you are going through right now. Be present. It may seem trite, but it's the key to enjoying life to the fullest — without having to spend money. Think about it — you can spend money on eating out, but if you are not really thinking about what you're eating, you may not enjoy it much at all. But if you cook a simple but delicious meal, and really taste every bite, it can be tremendously enjoyable without costing a lot. Read more .Slow down. In the same way, you can't really enjoy life to the fullest if it's rushing past you like it's on fast forward. Ever think about how quickly a week, a month, or a year goes by? Perhaps you're in the fast lane too much. Try slowing down, and things will be less stressful and more enjoyable. Drive slower , eat slower , live slower .Learn to find cheap, cool stuff. Call me crazy, but I love shopping at thrift stores. You can find so many cool things there, and it costs so little. Garage sales are the same way. Or check out Freecycle , or 20 Ways to Find Free or Cheap Books . /200806/40723Visionary. This style is most appropriate when an organization needs a new direction. Its goal is to move people towards a new set of shared dreams. “Visionary leaders articulate where a group is going, but not how it will get there - setting people free to innovate, experiment, take calculated risks,” writes Goleman。

In the past hundred years, the U.S. presidency has veered more and more to the left--not in policy, but in handedness. Barack Obama is the latest to join a long list of left-handed presidents from the 20th century: James Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Henry Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton were all southpaws. What makes lefties so electable? Some experts think left-handed people have a greater aptitude for language skills, which may help them craft the rhetoric necessary for political office. And as for the bout of recent left-handed presidents, some think it's because teachers only recently stopped working to convert lefties to righties at an early age. No.2 Bill Gates 比尔·盖茨Claiming the nation's richest man among their number is a source of considerable pride for America's society of southpaws. In fact, the Microsoft titan and philanthropist is one of a surprising number of U.S. business moguls to be left-handed, including Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller and former IBM head Lou Gerstner. But the club seems to be a guys-only fraternity-- research suggests that while left-handed men tend to earn more than their right-handed colleagues, there is no similar advantage for women. A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research floated the idea that left-handed men favor "divergent" thinking, a form of creativity in which the brain moves "from conventional knowledge into unexplored association." Maybe that's what it takes to develop a net worth estimated at billion. The talk-show queen doesn't need much more to set her apart from the rest--what with her estimated .7 billion fortune and a magic ability to sell books just by glancing at them--but she also has the distinction of being a member of the left-handed club. Since men are more likely to be left-handed than women, that makes Oprah doubly impressive. She's in good company: Other show-biz ladies of the southpaw persuasion include Whoopi Goldberg, Julia Roberts and Angelina Jolie (her husband Brad Pitt is also a lefty). Legend has it that Napoleon objected to the time-honored military practice of marching on the left side of the road with weapons at the y in the right hand: it put lefties like him at a strategic disadvantage. Once in power, the story goes, the French emperor--whose queen, Josephine, was also a southpaw--ordered his armies to switch sides. Civilians in countries he conquered had to do the same. Hence, supposedly, the rules of the road as we know them were born, which also explains why the British (who, along with the Prussians, defeated Napoleon at Waterloo) still drive on the left. Not only was atomic scientist Marie Curie left-handed, but she was the matriarch of a whole family of accomplished, southpaw scientists. Curie, who discovered the principles of radioactivity and won two Nobel Prizes, was married to fellow lefty Pierre Curie, who was instrumental in helping Marie's atomic research and shared one of her Nobel awards. Historians believe their daughter, Irene, was also left-handed. Irene went on to win a Nobel Prize of her own with her husband--who, you guessed it, was also left-handed. Lefty scientists are hardly unusual. In addition to the Curie clan, Einstein, Newton and Alan Turing--founder of modern computer science--all were left-handed as well. /200908/81925

No advance for women in top U.S. jobsWomen in 2008 made no significant gains in winning more top US business jobs, according to a study released on Wednesday, but the head of the study said women are poised to make strides in the year ahead. The number of women who were board directors, corporate officers or top earners at Fortune 500 companies remained essentially unchanged, said the study by Catalyst, a nonprofit group that promotes opportunities for women in business. The percentage of companies with women on the board of directors was 15.1 percent this year, compared with 14.8 percent in 2007, Catalyst said. Also, the percentage of corporate officer positions held by women was 15.7 percent in 2008 and 15.4 percent in 2007, it said. The percentage of top earners in 2008 who were women was 6.2 percent, compared to 6.7 percent in 2007, it said. The research on the Fortune 500 companies was based on data as of March 31, 2008. The slight changes in the numbers are not considered statistically significant, Catalyst said.Nevertheless, given the changes in U.S. politics, the future for women in business looks more promising, said Ilene Lang, president and chief executive officer of Catalyst."Overall we're expecting to see change next year," Lang said. "When we look at shareholders, decision makers, the general public, they're looking for change."What they're basically saying is, 'Don't give us more of the status quo. Get new ideas in there, get some fresh faces,'" she said.Lang said President-elect Barack Obama's choices for cabinet and other leadership positions, which include women and minorities, former rivals and opponents, bode well for women in the corporate world."These are very, very inclusive teams," she said. "I think that can be a role model for leadership in other sectors."The Catalyst study also noted that minority women -- black, Asian or Latina -- comprised 3.2 percent of company directorships, compared with 3.0 percent in 2007. /200812/58676。

Recognising your own handwriting rather than remembering a password could be used for online identification, new research shows.Your handwriting could be the best form of online security, say the developers of a new system that may one day replace difficult-to-remember passwords and PIN codes. With the new authentication program Dynahand, users just need to be able to recognise their own writing."I know it's my handwriting, but I don’t know how I know. I can't explain to somebody else how I do it," says Dr. Karen Renaud, a computer scientist and lecturer at the UK's University of Glasgow. She argues that's what makes the system more secure than coming up with a standard password, which is repeated over and over at different sites, can be shared with a friend, or stolen by an adversary. The system works using handwritten numbers instead of letters because although others may be able to recognise your penned words, they're not so good at distinguishing your handwritten numerals. In the laboratory test, Renaud asked 11 people to write the numbers 0 to 9 several times. She asked other volunteers to provide samples of their numerals, too, but these were eventually used to distract the study participants. She then scanned the numbers into a computer and used a software program, or algorithm, written by colleague Elin Olsen, to analyse the characteristics of the handwriting, such as height and width of strokes. The algorithm also kept track of which numerals belonged to which person and whose handwriting was more similar or distinct. At authentication, the program showed the participant a series of five-number handwritten PINs, each one randomly generated from the handwritten numerals. The number was not important and the user did not have to remember it. Instead the participant clicked on the PIN written in his or her handwriting. If they got it right, the program showed them another set of PINs. They then clicked again on the correct image. The program shows the user four sets of PINs, which takes about 28 seconds to complete, but ensures a higher level of security than just showing one set. And as with other PIN-password system, three wrong attempts and you're locked out.In the test, 10 of the 11 people recognised their own handwriting consistently. Although most of the people got it right, 11 participants is a low number to demonstrate the effectiveness of the technology, says Steve Furnell, professor of information systems security at the UK's University of Plymouth. "But the idea itself is very interesting," he says.In addition, although Renaud does not believe that this password method is robust enough to be used for sites with high-level security, such as online banking or e-commerce, it could work as a second layer on such sites, e.g., when you are changing an address or credit card information. /200812/58752

America 美国 An American woman living in Wisconsin volunteered to tutor1 English to a Japanese woman who had moved into the same community. “Before each lesson, and on each and every visit,” the American reported, “the Japanese lady brought me a gift — a book, some paper sculpture, flowers, or candy. It was embarrassing.” Unknowingly, this American was experiencing a vestige of protocol rooted centuries deep in the Japanese culture. In America, lavish, extravagant gifts are definitely out. An appropriate alternate to a gift is to take the deserving person to dinner, or to an entertainment or sporting event. On the contrary, gift giving is an institution and a revered custom in Japan. According to Business Tokyo magazine, among the Japanese “gift giving is a necessity, not merely a nicety as in the West.” In Japan the proper gift is thought to express the giver's true friendship, gratitude, and respect far better than words can. So if you plan to visit Japan or to have Japanese visit you here, be prepared. So you know gift giving plays a very important role in nowadays society. Now let's see what's happened in other countries. Australia is known for its friendly informality and lack of pretentiousness8. So modest gifts, such as a business diary, a paperweight, or a coffee mug might be presented as a memento9 of a visit of business meeting. At a trade show, T-shirts, ties, baseball caps, or a pin may be appropriate mementos. Anything more than these types of gifts could cause embarrassment. The most common form of showing appreciation in Greece is probably an evening's entertainment. If you do present a gift, avoid personal items, such as ties and shirts. If you are invited to a Greek home, flowers or a cake for the hostess are an appropriate gift. A West Virginia executive, visiting Germany for the first time, was invited to the home of his largest customer. He decided to be gallant4 and bring his hostess a bouquet of flowers. He selected a dozen red roses. Oops! Terrible mistake! Social gift giving is popular and well-established in Germany but has certain do's and don'ts. Flowers are often taken to a hostess of a dinner party at her home, but there are three taboos to remember: 1)red roses signify a romantic interest, 2)an even5 number of flowers signifies bad luck, as does the number thirteen, and 3)always unwrap the flowers before presenting them. This West Virginia was making what amounted to a pass at his customer's wife. When visiting a German home, gifts that reflect your home country are popular, and you might want to bring small gifts for the children of the family you are visiting. Gifts are customarily6 wrapped and many Germans spend considerable time designing elegant wrappings. Most shops offer gift-wrapping services, too. When you are invited to a person's home for dinner, it might be nice to bring flowers or a box of chocolates for your hostess, although it is just as considerate to have the flowers sent the next day. Yellow roses can signify “jealousy.” And in Italy never send chrysanthemums7, since they suggest death. /200903/64225

Aries: notice and remember You are naturally outgoing and caring and, quite frankly, accustomed to being people’s favorite. But don’t get too comfortable. There is work required in friendship, and usually it has to do with paying attention. The little things matter. Your friends are always giving you hints about what they want in life and what might be meaningful or helpful to them. All you have to do is to take note and follow through。 Taurus: be eventful You’re a true-blue kind of friend. Your consistent quality of attention fosters trust and establishes a strong foundation of the relationship. Take it to the next level by creating special moments with your friends. Give yourself and your friend something to laugh about as you grow older。 How to Be a Better Friend Gemini: give one-on-one time You twins are social butterflies who like to do things in groups. While a boisterous gathering is usually a blast, the intimacy that keeps friendship alive can get lost in the crowd. So be sure to fortify your friendships with time devoted exclusively to each person。 /201010/116001
