I believe that what we often call survival skills is simply creativity at work. When I think about how my mother fed all seven of us, making us think that every day was a “different meal,” I still appreciate how much a creative cook can do with a single potato. And it wasn’t just in the kitchen. She would flip her old Singer sewing machine upright, study pictures in books and magazines, then make ethnic versions of those same dolls and stuffed animals to sell at church fundraisers. Without a TV in the house to distract us, we made the dolls come to life, filling the hollow fabric sleeves one fistful of cotton at a time.My mother made her own clothes, all my sisters’ prom and wedding dresses. I always knew when she was making something, because she would be singing or humming. She sang all the way through her home correspondence courses in floral design and interior decorating. She made being creative as normal as breathing and encouraged our participation by telling us that “idle hands and minds were the devil’s workshop.”I believe that happy children are those given the freedom to be expressive, to discover, to create their own “refrigerator door” masterpieces. I remember mixing tempera paints with powdered detergent and painting the Baskin-Robbins windows every Christmas season. Not money, but all the ice cream I could eat. And every time I saw people look up at the window and smile I knew I was getting the best part of the deal.I believe that the highest quality of life is full of art and creative expression and that all people deserve it. I believe in a broad definition of what art is and who artists are Barbers, cooks, auto detailers, janitors and gardeners have as much right to claims of artistry as designers, architects, painters and sculptors. Every day, our streets and school buses become art galleries in the m of perfectly spiked hair, zigzagging cornrows and dizzying shoelace artistry. My first collection of art was a milk crate full of comic books. I survived the projects and my teenage years inspired by my favorite character, the Black Panther, who had only his mind and no superpowers, and Luke Cage, the thick-skinned inner-city Hero Hire. By the time my “bookish” reputation and thick glasses became a target the neighborhood bullies, I responded by composing juvenile, but truly “heroic” rhyming couplets in my head.Ever since high school, words have continued to serve as my first weapon of choice and my salvation. Many of life’s challenges need creative solutions. I believe creativity — in all its many ms — can change the way we think and operate. Celebrating the creativity around us helps maintain our sanity and keeps us happy.Frank X Walker is Assistant Professor of English at Eastern Kentucky University. Or maybe you have an English-speaking colleague that you would like to get closer to. Latte in hand, spsheets on hold: these are a few phrases you are more than likely to hear amongst your work colleagues as you relax. They’re easy to pick up and use, too. 1.(to) play catch up – to be late starting something so you make a big eft to overcome it; it doesn’t mean you have been lazy!– more often it refers to when something comes in last minute, or you are working to a tight deadline. (to) play catch up –开始做某件事情有点晚,使你不得不花大力气去完成它;这并不是指你懒惰!-它经常更多的是指做某事到最后关头了,或者你临近截止日期,尽力追赶的意思 e.g.“We’re playing catch-up on that commission from France.” Meaning: we’re working overtime to get everything y the commission from France. When might you use it? To express being a bit stressed out or under pressure to deliver a project; to express the eft required to overcome something which you are currently behind schedule. You might also use the phrase to motivate or drive your own team to complete something – “we’re playing catch-up here, guys” – as it can add an air of competition. 一般是表达承受着巨大的压力或是顶着压力去实现一项任务;可用于表达你需要努力去完成已经落后于进度的事情你可能也用这个词组去激励或者驱使你的团队去完成某项任务—“同伴们,我们快实现目标啦”—它可能增加竞争的气氛 .(to) pay a premium– meaning you pay a higher price something because the quality or reputation is better –是指你要花费更高的价格购买某物,因为它的质量或名声更好 e.g.“We’re paying a premium the plug from X Box, but it’s worth it” “我们花了高价的XBox插座,但是它值” When might you use it? This can be used in coffee machine conversation very easily – it just refers to a deal you’ve made where the company (or yourself) has paid a price that is above the normal market price. You might use it to gain a bit of prestigeboast about your purchase. 3.an uphill strugglebattle– meaning it’s a big obstacle to overcome If you’re in an American business you are more likely to hear ‘uphill battle’; ‘uphill struggle’ is the UK equivalent. 如果你处在美国商业环境中,你可能更多的听到的是‘uphill battle’; ‘uphill struggle’在英国是同等的意思 e.g.“Getting this new construction under budget is an uphill struggle, but we have to make it happen.” “在现有预算下做好这个新工程很难,但是我们也要让其实现” When might you use it? When talking about a project that is particularly difficult – or if you want to make something sound difficult. It would also work very nicely alongside ‘playing catch-up’ – i.e. “we’re playing catch-up on the construction project and it’s going to be an uphill struggle.” The mother role is universally carried out by women, which is biologically based. Roles defined by sex also characterize the economic sphere so that the tasks men perm are different from those women perm. This difference is not any outgrowth of the biological differences between men and women. A specific task may be associated with men in one society and with women in another. Milking herd animals, example, may be women’s task in some societies and a man’s task in others. Males and females are each associated with different kinds of behavior. These concepts of male and female behavior extended to how people walk, sit, talk and dress. In our society, as in all others, men walk and talk in certain ways and until recently dressed very differently from women. In some societies, different spatial areas are associated with males and females. Women in many Middle Eastern societies are restricted to certain parts of the house and may only come into contact with the males who are members of their family. In such societies, the coffee house and the market are defined as male domains. In contrast, in some West African societies, women most often appear in the marketplace. Sometimes, men choose to carry out female rather than male roles. In some cases, some men dress like women and perm female tasks. On the other hand, females who carry out male roles usually dress and act like men. Because of women’s association with mothering and the home, women are associated with the domestic affairs and men are associated with the public affairs. In a number of New Guinea societies, men are associated with the men’s house in which they eat and sleep while women are associated with their own dwelling houses. In our own and other Western societies this division was true until the beginning of the th century. Politics, the courts, businesses, banks, and so th were male areas, and so too were the social clubs where real business was carried out. At the beginning of the th century, women began to question the assignment of the male and female role. They med social groups and began to demand the right to vote. They began to move into the business and professional worlds as well. Men regarded the women pioneers in this movement as very manlike. Even today women in business, law or banking wear very tailored, conservative suits to work. As these changes occur in female roles in contemporary American society, men are increasingly taking on child care and domestic tasks.

Marty Had a Little Lamb It was lambing season. The neighbors’ phone call brought my dad and me rushing to their barn1) to help with a difficult delivery. We found a lamb whose mother had died while giving birth. The orphan) was weak, cold, still shrouded with the placenta3),and walking impossibly on tall and wobbly legs.I bundled him up in my coat and put him in the pickup truck the short ride back to our small family farm in rural Idaho. We drove through our barnyard, passing cows, pigs, chickens, dogs and cats, but Dad head ed straight the house.I didn’t know it yet,but that lamb was destined to become more than an ordinary sheep, just as I was destined to become more than an ordinary seven-year-old boy――I was about to become a mommy.Cradling) the lamb in my arms,I brought him into the kitchen. While Mom and I wiped the lamb down with dry towels,Dad stoked the furnace with coal so that the newborn would have warming heat to drive away the cold.As I petted his curly little head, the tiny creature tried sucking on my fingers. He was hungry. We slipped a nipple over a pop bottle full of warm milk and stuck it into his mouth. He latched on,and instantly his jaws pumped like a machine, sending the nourishing milk to his stomach. As soon as he started eating, his tail started wagging furiously. Then suddenly his eyes popped open the first time, and he looked me right in the eye.He gave me that miraculous moment-of-birth look that every mother knows. The look that says, unmistakably,“Hello Mommy.I‘m yours, you’re mine, ain’t life fine.”A young boy with tousled blond hair an d thick black glasses doesn’t look much like a sheep. But this little lamb didn’t care in the least. The important thing was that he had a mom――me.I named him Henry and, just like the nursery rhyme, everywhere that Marty went, the lamb was sure to go.The instant bond we shared that first day turned into the same deep kind of connection that develops between mother and child. We were always together.I‘d feed, exercise and bathe Henry.I‘d scold him sternly5) when he got out in the road.Imagine the amazement and delight of my classmates when I had a couple of dogs and a sheep run to meet me at the school bus.Every day after school,Henry and I played games together until we both fell asleep, side by side,in the tall cool grass of the pasture. As I grew up,Henry grew older.Never once, however, did he get that I was his mom.Even as a full-grown ram,he nuzzled me fondly, rubbing his big woolly head against my leg whenever he saw me.Functioning as a four-legged lawn mower6) and wool-covered dog at the Becker farm,Henry had a happy, healthy, full life the rest of his days.People sometimes ask me why I became a veterinarian. The answer is:Henry. At seven years old,my love animals was still just a spark. But it ignited7) into a flame at that magical moment when I became a mother to a hungry little lamb. Life grows in the soil of timeWhat I believe, what I value most, is transitoriness. But is not transitoriness - the perishableness of life - something very sad? No! It is the very soul of existence. It imparts value, dignity, interest to life. Transitoriness creates time - and "time is the essence." Potentially at least, time is the supreme, most useful gift. Time is related to - yes, identical with - everything creative and active, every process toward a higher goal. Without transitoriness, without beginning or end, birth or death, there is no time, either. Timelessness - in the sense of time never ending, never beginning - is a stagnant nothing. It is absolutely uninteresting. Life is possessed by tremendous tenacity. Even so its presence remains conditional, and as it had a beginning, so it will have an end. I believe that life, just this reason, is exceedingly enhanced in value, in charm. One of the most important characteristics distinguishing man from all other ms of nature is his knowledge of transitoriness, of beginning and end, and theree of the gift of time. In man transitory life attains its peak of animation, of soul power, so to speak. This does not mean alone would have a soul. Soul quality pervades all beings. But man's soul is most awake in his knowledge of the interchangeability of the term "existence" and "transitoriness". To man time is given like a piece of land, as it were, entrusted to him faithful tilling; a space in which to strive incessantly, achieve self-realization, more onward and upward. Yes, with the aid of time, man becomes capable of wresting the immortal from the mortal. Deep down, I believe - and deem such belief natural to every human soul - that in the university prime significance must be attributed to this earth of ours. Deep down I believe that creation of the universe out of nothingness and of life out of inorganic state ultimately aimed at the creation of man. I believe that man is meant as a great experiment whose possible failure of man's own guilt would be paramount to the failure of creation itself. Whether this belief be true or not, man would be well advised if he behaved as though it were.
