Happiness is contagious, study findsHappiness is contagious, researchers reported on Thursday. The same team that demonstrated obesity and smoking sp in networks has shown that the more happy people you know, the more likely you are yourself to be happy. And getting connected to happy people improves a person's own happiness, they reported in the British Medical Journal."What we are dealing with is an emotional stampede," Nicholas Christakis, a professor of medical sociology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, said in a telephone interview.Christakis and James Fowler, a political scientist at the University of California, San Diego, have been using data from 4,700 children of volunteers in the Framingham Heart Study, a giant health study begun in Framingham, Massachusetts in 1948.They have been analyzing a trove of facts from tracking sheets dating back to 1971, following births, marriages, death, and divorces. Volunteers also listed contact information for their closest friends, co-workers, and neighbors. They assessed happiness using a simple, four-question test."People are asked how often during the past week, one, I enjoyed life, two, I was happy, three, I felt hopeful about the future, and four, I felt that I was just as good as other people," Fowler said. The 60 percent of people who scored highly on all four questions were rated as happy, while the rest were designated unhappy.People with the most social connections -- friends, spouses, neighbors, relatives -- were also the happiest, the data showed. "Each additional happy person makes you happier," Christakis said. And happiness is more contagious than unhappiness, they discovered."If a social contact is happy, it increases the likelihood that you are happy by 15 percent," Fowler said. "A friend of a spouse or a sibling, if they are happy, increases your chances by 10 percent," he added.A happy third-degree friend -- a friend of a friend -- increases a person's chances of being happy by 6 percent."But every extra unhappy friend increases the likelihood that you'll be unhappy by 7 percent," Fowler said.

Gentlemen do not just prefer blondes, but lighter-skinned women in general, a study has suggested.Scientists looking into attractiveness in men and women suggest that men from all races find fairer-skinned woman most alluring, while women are the polar opposite and favour darker, brooding men. They said the attraction is driven by preferences based on moral assumptions.Men are subconsciously attracted to fairer-skinned icons such as Nicole Kidman or Kylie Minogue because of the skin tone's association with innocence, purity, modesty, virginity, vulnerability and goodness.Women, on the other hand, pick men with darker complexions - such as film stars Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell or Jamie Foxx - because these are associated with sex, virility, mystery, villainy and danger. The latter two actors were paired together in the recent Miami Vice movie, which topped the box office on both sides of the Atlantic despite lukewarm reviews.Academics at the University of Toronto in Canada say their study proves the fair maiden of myth has a basis in scientific reality. They studied more than 2,000 advertising photographs and found that the skin of white women was 15.2 per cent lighter than the skin of white males, and the skin of black women 11.1 per cent lighter than the skin of black men.Dr Shyon Baumann, a sociologist involved in the study, said: "What the research shows is that our aesthetic preferences operate to reflect moral preferences."Within our cultures we have a set of ideals about how women should look and behave."Lightness and darkness have particular meanings attached to them and we subconsciously relate those moral preferences to women."In effect, men drawn to darker looking women - such as actress Monica Bellucci - are expressing a preference for danger.Dr Baumann said this appreciation of a darker complexion in women is "less common" but "appears to coexist with a view of such women as more overtly sexual. /200803/31207

Wasting time at work? You're not alone: surveyAmericans who feel bored and underpaid do work hard -- at surfing the Internet and catching up on gossip, according to a survey that found U.S. workers waste about 20 percent of their working day .An online survey of 2,057 employees by online compensation company Salary.com found about six in every 10 workers admit to wasting time at work with the average employee wasting 1.7 hours of a typical 8.5 hour working day.Personal Internet use topped the list as the leading time-wasting activity according to 34 percent of respondents, with 20.3 percent then listing socializing with co-workers and 17 percent conducting personal business as taking up time. The reasons why people wasted time were varied with nearly 18 percent of respondents questioned by e-mail in June and July said boredom and not having enough to do was the main reason. The second most popular reason for wasting time was having too long hours (13.9 percent), being underpaid (11.8 percent), and a lack of challenging work (11.1 percent). While the amount of time wasted at work seems high, Bill Coleman, chief compensation officer at Salary.com. said the numbers have improved, with the amount of time wasted dropping 19 percent since Salary.com conducted its first annual survey on slacking at work in 2005. Then workers reported wasting 2.09 hours of their working day."I think (the decline) is really a result of the economy and that there's more business, more work available and less time to sit around wondering what you are going to do with your day," Coleman told reporters. /200808/46210

An American friend has invited you to visit his family. You've never been to an American's home before, and you're not sure what to do. Should you take a gift? How should you dress? What time should you arrive? What should you do when you get there? Glad you asked. When you're the guest, you should just make yourself at home. That's what hospitality is all about: making people feel at home when they're not. The question of whether or not to bring a gift often makes guests squirm. Giving your host a gift is not just a social nicety in some cultures-it's expected. But in American culture, a guest is not obligated to bring a present. Of course, some people do bring a small token of appreciation to their host. Appropriate gifts for general occasions might be flowers, candy or-if the family has small children-toys. If you choose not to bring a gift, don't worry. No one will even notice. American hospitality begins at home-especially when it involves food. Most Americans agree that good home cooking beats restaurant food any day. When invited for a meal, you might ask, "Can I bring anything?" Unless it's a potluck, where everyone brings a dish, the host will probably respond, "No, just yourself." For most informal dinners, you should wear comfortable, casual clothes. Plan to arrive on time, or else call to inform your hosts of the delay. During the dinner conversation, it's customary to compliment the hostess on the wonderful meal. Of course, the biggest compliment is to eat lots of food! When you've had plenty, you might offer to clear the table or wash the dishes. But since you're the guest, your hosts may not let you. Instead, they may invite everyone to move to the living room for dessert with tea or coffee. After an hour or so of general chit-chat, it's probably time to head for the door. You don't want to wear out your welcome. And above all, don't go snooping around the house. It's more polite to wait for the host to offer you a guided tour. But except for housewarmings, guests often don't get past the living room. Americans usually like to have advance notice when people come to see them. Only very close friends drop by unannounced. This is especially true if the guests want to stay for a few days. Here's a good rule of thumb for house guests: Short stays are best. As one 19th century French writer put it, "The first day a man is a guest, the second a burden, the third a pest." Even relatives don't usually stay for several weeks at a time. While you're staying with an American family, try to keep your living area neat and tidy. Your host family will appreciate your consideration. And they may even invite you back! Most Americans consider themselves hospitable people. Folks in the southern ed States, in particular, take pride in entertaining guests. In fact, "southern hospitality" has become legendary. But in all parts of America, people welcome their guests with open arms. So don't be surprised to find the welcome mat out for you. Just don't forget to wipe your feet. /201003/100271

Curse Words in ShakespeareThe works of William Shakespeare are often held up as the epitome of good English. However what most people aren't aware of is that they are full of sexual innuendo and that they even contain the odd curse word. In fact there are even references to the C-word, with it being alluded to three times in Shakespeare's plays. Once in Hamlet, once in Henry V and most blatantly of all in Twelfth Night, where the character Malvolio actually spells the word out.CIA/MI6 Overthrowing Democratic GovernmentsIn the west we're taught at school that we are the good guys and that the rest of the world are the bad guys, and that it's our job to sp our “democratic values” around the globe. However what we're not taught is that our governments (namely the British and American) have actually at times masterminded the overthrow of democratic governments in order to pursue their own nefarious ambitions. There are numerous examples of this, particularly in South America and the Middle East, one of the most notable being the ousting of Iran's democratically elected government in the early 1950's.College Drop OutsAnother thing not often spoken about at school is that many of the worlds most successful and intelligent people didn't actually like education and in some cases left it altogether. In fact, Albert Einstein, the very poster boy of intellectualism, intensely disliked school. He compared being at school to like being in the army and resented the way it tried to put boundaries and constraints on people. Other famous people who were critical of organised education include Victor Hugo, Leonardo da Vinci and the writer Alexandre Dumas.Historic PornographyIn history class, when we learnt about ancient Greece and Rome, we were taught about the wars, literature, art and invention of those classical civilisations. However what was never mentioned was the obsession the ancient world had with sex. It permeated almost every aspect of society and was graphically represented in much of their artwork. In fact when places such as Pompeii and Herculaneum were excavated they were found to be covered in erotic frescoes and sexual inscriptions. So much so that the discoveries were kept from public view and sometimes even vandalised so as to obscure their explicit nature.Fascist Coup Planned for AmericaAnother piece of history that you probably weren't taught about at school concerns a little known plot to implement a fascist takeover in the ed States. The plot, recently investigated by B Radio 4, was led by wealthy industrialists and bankers, including Prescott Bush (grandfather of George W. Bush), who were displeased with Franklin D. Roosevelt's progressive political policies in the early 1930's. The plan may have succeeded were it not for a Marine Corps Major General named Smedley Butler, who blew the whistle on the plot after being approached by the influential power brokers who wanted him to lead the uprising.Columbus Didn't Discover AmericaThe truth is that Columbus wasn't even close to being the first to discover the New World. The Vikings visited the Americas some 500 years before Columbus did and there are also people who believe that the Chinese beat him to it as well. On top of this there is the simple fact that there were people in the Americas before Columbus arrived. It's only a vestige of Eurocentric imperialism that leads us to think of America as having been “discovered” in the traditional sense and it's left many people who are native to the continent with the feeling that their pre-Columbus history has been ignored and devalued.Playing Video Games is Good For YouChildren are often chastised for wasting their time playing computer games. However research shows that games can help improve reflexes, eyesight and intelligence. Shoot-em-up games in particular were shown to aid visual skills. There is even a doctor from New York's Beth Israel Medical Center, named James C. Rosser, who co-authored a study suggesting that surgeons that played games were faster and less prone to making mistakes than their non-game playing counterparts.TV is EducationalTV, like games, is another thing that is often seen as being a bad influence on people. The criticism it gets however couldn't be more misguided, as television is in fact one of the most educational things ever invented. It allows people to learn about the entire world from the comfort of their own living room and has been responsible for the collective education of a large chunk of humanity for the last fifty years. The fall of the Berlin Wall, the Moon Landings, the plight of Africa and global warming are just a few of the things we've been informed and updated about by television. May it continue to entertain and illuminate us long into the future.Fractional Reserve BankingFractional Reserve Banking is a system of banking that essentially allows banks to lend out money that they don't actually possess. It's legal and operates to varying degrees across the planet. It's the root cause of inflation and is something that few people know about and even fewer people understand. If people were educated about it, they wouldn't allow it to continue. However as our education systems are more concerned with the superficial than the essential, we'll probably all continue in ignorance of it until the world economy collapses under the weight of our collective debt. The Drug Use of Poets and WritersOne of the greatest ironies of education is the way children are constantly told of the dangers of drugs and alcohol while at the same time being encouraged, and sometimes forced, to learn about poets and writers, most of which were notorious drug users, alcoholics and womanisers. Famous figures in literature who are associated with drugs include Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Thomas de Quincey and Jack Kerouac. One popular drug of choice amongst writers was laudanum, a solution of opium in alcohol, and was commonly used for both medicinal and recreational purposes, particularly during the Romantic period. Author Aldous Huxley was also open about his drug use, writing about his experiences with LSD. In fact I'm sure that in a hundred years time teachers will be forcing children to learn about Marilyn Manson and Pete Doherty in much the same way that they try to teach them about writers of poetry and fiction today. /200804/35924

Forget the romantic novel. Most women are bored with, and cynical about, the well-trodden path of romantic fiction. They do not like happy endings and would rather a thriller or crime novel. But their literary idol is still Mr Darcy, the haughty hero of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.A survey of 1,500 predominantly married, working women aged 35 to 59 found that the majority would rather a good book than have sex, shop, or sleep.Nearly half finished a book in less than a week, 48 per cent more than one book at a time and, in the last year, one in five had spent pound;100 or more on novels. The women surveyed said their favourite types of fiction were thrillers (47 per cent), contemporary fiction (46 per cent) and crime (45 per cent) with science fiction and romance their least favourite. The findings correspond with public library statistics, published recently, which showed that in only 10 years the nation had ended its love affair with family sagas and books about romance and was devouring thrillers--the more ghoulish the better.Comparative figures for 10 years ago showed that the late Catherine Cookson and Barbara Taylor Bradford, queens of raw family romances, were the authors most borrowed by adults from libraries. The top 10 borrowed titles have a startlingly different feel now. Romance still made a showing, but the list was dominated by crime novels. However, today's survey by Woman amp; Home magazine found that if women could pick one book it would be the romantic classic Pride and Prejudice.Mr Darcy was also regarded as the sexiest fictional man, beating Heathcliffe (Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights), Rhett Butler (Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell) and Mr Rochester (Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte). The only modern hero to get a vote was Ian Fleming's James Bond. If they were to be a character in a book, most women would be Elizabeth Bennett. Gone with the Wind's Scarlett O'Hara was voted the most glamorous female character. U.S. doctors have found the Bee Gees 1977 disco anthem "Stayin' Alive" provides an ideal beat to follow while performing chest compressions as part of CPR on a heart attack victim. The American Heart Association calls for chest compressions to be given at a rate of 100 per minute in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)(心肺复苏). "Stayin' Alive" almost perfectly matches that, with 103 beats per minute.CPR is a lifesaving technique involvingchest compressions(心脏按压) alone or with mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing(口对口人工呼吸). It is used in emergencies such as cardiac arrest in which a person's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.CPR can triple survival rates, but some people are reluctant to do it in part because they are unsure about the proper rhythm for chest compressions. But research has shown many people do chest compressions too slowly during CPR.In a small study headed by Dr. David Matlock of the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, listening to "Stayin' Alive" helped 15 doctors and medical students to perform chest compressions on dummies at the proper speed.Five weeks after practicing with the music playing, they were asked to perform CPR again on dummies by keeping the song in their minds, and again they kept up a good pace."The theme 'Stayin' Alive' is very appropriate for the situation," Matlock said in a telephone interview on Thursday. "Everybody's heard it at some point in their life. People know the song and can keep it in their head."The findings will be presented this month at a meeting of the American College of Emergency Physicians in Chicago. /200810/54040Lavender language functions as a kind of homosexual code, characterised by acronyms, plays on words and double meanings only intended to be understood by the gay community. The colour lavender is often used to identify 'gay-friendly' environments, hence its use in terminology surrounding gay issues. This alternative sense of the adjective lavender is, in fact, used productively in a variety of issues surrounding the gay community, and in the linguistic context occurs in descriptions such as lavender texts, lavender phonology/terminology and the lavender lexicon. Lavender的这种用法出现在各种与同性恋有关的主题中,比如lavender texts(同性恋文本)、lavender phonology(同性恋语音体系),以及lavender lexicon(同性恋词汇表)等。 /201108/150919

So, whats wrong with sex before marriage? “A lot of people look for the correct person, but they don’t worry about becoming the correct person.”Would you like your future life partner to be somebody who has slept with a numerous amount of people and knows the body and intimacy of those who will in the future become strangers in your relationship?Or, would you prefer somebody who wants to have that experience with you and only you because they know that sex is something serious?Would you prefer spending your life with someone who has been within 50 different relationships, or with someone who has never had a boyfriend/girlfriend?Does it not sound better if both can be able to learn form each others sexuality rather than permitting your partner to learn with others? Would it not sound better to be your partners first and last? Yours and only yours. Not every body thinks this way. But be honest to yourself, isn’t this better than what common society tells us?Now I understand that many might say that “nobody waits for marriage anymore”. But this is the exact same reason why we have so many problems when it comes to the topic of sex:The exact same reason why people suffer from so much “emotional baggage”. The exact same reason why HIV is a top threat to modern society. The same reason why so many people die from AIDS. The top reason of so many abortions. The seed reason for why more than 50% of all marriages end in divorce because of infidelity .So, whats wrong with sex before marriage? All that is stated above. Now a sexual experiences is not just any type of experience. It is something that stays recorded in the mind permanently. When this is lived with someone, that person becomes more than just anybody for you. When a relationship is over, people tend to say that “it is the past”. But the truth is that it’s not in the past because the past forms part of your present and your future. What ever was done in the past becomes part of you for the rest of your life consciously or subconsciously.Proof of this is the knowledge you have of everything you know. This would include the alphabet, numbers, the language that you speak, the people that you know and everything that you do on the daily basis, you owe it all to your past.So when it comes to live that moment with that special someone, it would be almost inevitable to forget the past sexual experiences from others, staining the present moment with your beloved partner. Kate Winslet not only swept the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards this year for her acting skills, but she also blew away1 the competition for best dressed. “Kate dresses to really show off her curves,” her stylist Freddie Leiba says. /200912/91582

Have you, like me, drooled over French model Noemi Lenoir's perfect body on all those Mamp;S billboards? She is always the one chosen to wear the bikinis and lingerie: women envy and emulate her because she has curves, beautiful pale green eyes and that halo of corkscrew hair。 Men lust after her because she looks like a sexy woman, not an emaciated child。 /201005/104180

On the afternoon of 16th, 50-plus civil servants participated the “olfaction” blind date in JIANWAI modern mall of Beijing, all attendees covered their eyes with eyepatches and drew on the masks, then, switched off the electricity, everyone carefully discriminated smell the isomerism gave out. If the woman found the man who had similar smell, she just patted(原形pat) him thrice, then invited him to join the following activity. The two parties with eyes covered participated a series of activities such as “Mind acts upon mind”, “tackle danger situations”, then chose lovers and sent the love tokens to each other.Although “closed” the eyes, we all know clearly---in the laugh with tease, boring and vacancy, through short body touch, what two strangers found is love? The immoral orgasm which caused by the curiosity was instantly met is equal to the love convulsion of “telesthesia”, there is no such fools in the world. If the things like that, the love game is too fickle and valueless. Love isn’t a game, if you treat it as a game, your heart will be abandoned ruthlessly; if you are originally a “game”, please don’t fake it as the name of love.“olfactory marriage interview” may be a romantic game, but how many real winners in this game?

Jessica’s asking about aging: It seems to me that the best way to keep my skin looking great and wrinkle-free would be to prevent as much aging as possible, as opposed to trying to reverse the process when I’m older. Other than sunscreen, what kinds of products should I be using at this point (I’m 25) to keep my skin looking young? The Left Brain’s rejuvenating reply:This is a great beauty question and one that we see asked more and more. The proliferation of anti-aging products has gotten so extensive, you’d think cosmetic marketers want us all to revert to 3-year olds. And with some of the claims made, they certainly treat us like that is the age of our intelligence. The Anti-Aging Secrets for your SkinYou want to know what’s been proven to work? Here it is…Sun ProtectionFirst, protect your skin from the sun. This is the number one environmental cause of skin aging. Do this by minimizing your sun exposure and using sunscreen.Eat WellNext, eat a balanced diet. While everyone is different, this meta-review study on skin health and diet concluded that people who had higher intake of Vitamin C and linoleic acid and lower intakes of fats and carbohydrates had younger looking skin. You get linoleic acid by eating vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains and seeds.ExerciseFinally, exercise. Nothing keeps you looking and feeling young like regular exercise. Thousands of studies have shown that physical exercise is a highly effective way to treat all all signs of aging.Anti-aging TreatmentsMost scientists are skeptical of anti-aging treatments. This is because there is little published evidence from controlled clinical trials to show most anti-aging products have any benefit. You could say this is because private companies don’t want to make their research public, but if they did have meaningful, positive results you can be sure the PR arm of the company would crow about this where ever they could. We’ve seen previously that price is not indicative of the effectiveness of an anti-aging skin treatment. The conclusion was that none of the products were as effective as claimed.Does any treatment work? The only thing that scientists and reputable dermatologists agree on is that application of topical retinoids can repair sun damaged skin and prevent future collagen damage. Oh yeah, and they all say using sunscreen is a good thing.Beyond that, forget about it. Yes, that includes the Perricone Restorative Cream. Vitamin C works when you eat it, not when you slather it on your skin.Lasers for your skin?Recently, lasers and LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) have been shown to effectively rejuvenate photoaged skin. Cosmetic surgeons have been making lots of money from these treatments and the big cosmetic manufacturers like Pamp;G and L’Oreal are trying to bring you this same treatment at home. But the technology isn’t quite y. Products you can buy right now like the Beurer Softlaser will likely disappoint. The Beauty Brains bottom lineScientists in the anti-aging field (who are not trying to sell you products) agree, anti-aging products are over-priced and under-deliver. For a 20-something, the best thing you can do is eat right, exercise and avoid long sun exposure. If you’re a bit older, start using skin products that contain vitamin A derivatives. They’re the only thing that has yet been proven to be effective. /200803/31201

Fathers who were spanked as children are less likely to spank their own children than mothers who were spanked while young, according to a US study. Researchers from Ohio State University set out to see if 1990s parents followed the practices of their own mothers but found parents today were showing a lot more affection to their children, ing to them more and spanking them less. We were surprised that mothers seem to learn a lot about the parenting role from their own mothers, but fathers don't follow their mothers as much," said researcher Jonathan Vespa in a statement. The study of 1,133 young adult parents found significant generational changes in parenting practices. Overall, there was a large generational shift in which the second generation of parents was much less likely to spank than their own parents. Second generation mothers who were spanked at least once a week were found to be nearly half as more likely to spank their own children compared to mothers who weren't spanked. Fathers spanked as children were less likely to spank their own children. The study found only 28 percent of the second generation of fathers reported spanking their children compared to 43 percent of mothers. 43%。"A little spanking of boys seems to deter (fathers) from spanking their own children later in life," said Vespa. The evidence suggests that mothers are more the disciplinarians in the family than fathers are today."“数据表明,在当今家庭中,教训孩子更多的是母亲而不是父亲。”In general, the amount of affection that parents show their children has increased significantly over the generations. Sixty percent of fathers and 73 percent of mothers in the second generation reported showing their children physical affection and praising them within the last week compared to only 40 percent of their parents openly showing affection weekly. Reading to children had also increased markedly. Nearly three times more mothers in the second generation reported ing to their children daily compared to their own parents. /200908/81146
