After Apple-PickingRobert Frost (1874-1963)My long two-pointed ladder’s sticking through a treeToward heaven still,And there’s a barrel that I didn’t fillBeside it, and there may be two or threeApples I didn’t pick upon some bough. But I am done with apple-picking now.Essence of winter sleep is on the night, The scent of apples: I am drowsing off.I cannot rub the strangeness from my sightI got from looking through a pane of glassI skimmed this morning from the drinking troughAnd held against the world of hoary grass. It melted, and I let it fall and break. But I was wellUpon my way to sleep before it fell, And I could tellWhat form my dreaming was about to take.Magnified apples appear and disappear, Stem end and blossom end, And every fleck of russet showing clear. My instep arch not only keeps the ache, It keeps the pressure of a ladder-round.I feel the ladder sway as the boughs bend. And I keep hearing from the cellar binThe rumbling soundOf load on load of apples coming in.For I have had too muchOf apple-picking: I am overtiredOf the great harvest I myself desired. There were ten thousand thousand fruit to touch, Cherish in hand, lift down, and not let fall. For allThat struck the earth, No matter if not bruised or spiked with stubble, Went surely to the cider-apple heapAs of no worth. One can see what will troubleThis sleep of mine, whatever sleep it is.Were he not gone,The woodchuck could say whether it’s like hisLong sleep, as I describe its coming on,Or just some human sleep. Article/200909/84166A sudden silence fell downstairs. Two seconds later Harry, heart thudding madly, heard Uncle Vernon coming into the hall,两秒钟后,心脏怦怦乱跳的哈利听到弗农姨父走到门厅里,calling, “Dudley must have left his television on gain, the little tyke!” In the closet!” hissed Harry,“快! stuffing Dobby in, shutting the door, and flinging himself onto the bed just as the door handle turned. “What — the — devil — are — you — doing?” said Uncle Vernon through gritted teeth, his face horribly close to Harry’s.“你——到底——在——搞——什——么——鬼?” “You’ve just ruined the punch line of my Japanese golfer joke. . . .“我正讲到日本高尔夫球手的笑话中最关键的地方,都被你给搅了……One more sound and you’ll wish you’d never been born, boy!”再发出一点儿声音,我让你后悔生下来,小子!”He stomped flat-footed from the room. Shaking, Harry let Dobby out of the closet. “See what it’s like here?” he said.“看到这里的情况了吧?“See why I’ve got to go back to Hogwarts? It’s the only place I’ve got — well, I think I’ve got friends.” “Friends who don’t even write to Harry Potter?” said Dobby slyly.“什么朋友,连信都不给哈利波特写一封?” “I expect they’ve just been — wait a minute,” said Harry, frowning.“我想他们只是——慢着,”哈利皱起眉头,“How do you know my friends haven’t been writing to me?”“你怎么知道我的朋友没给我写信?”Dobby shuffled his feet. “Harry Potter mustn’t be angry with Dobby. Dobby did it for the best —”“哈利波特不要生多比的气——多比都是为了……”“Have you been stopping my letters?”“你截了我的信?”“Dobby has them here, sir,” said the elf.“信在多比这儿,先生。” Stepping nimbly out of Harry’s reach, he pulled a thick wad of envelopes from the inside of the pillowcase he was wearing. Harry could make out Hermione’s neat writing, Ron’s untidy scrawl, and even a scribble that looked asthough it was from the Hogwarts gamekeeper, Hagrid. Dobby blinked anxiously up at Harry. “Harry Potter mustn’t be angry. . . . Dobby hoped . . . if Harry Potter thought his friends had forgotten him . . . Harry Potter might not want to go back to school, sir. . . He made a grab for the letters, but Dobby jumped out of reach. “Harry Potter will have them, sir, if he gives Dobby his word that he will not return to Hogwarts.“哈利波特先要向多比保不回霍格沃茨。Ah, sir, this is a danger you must not face! Say you won’t go back, sir!” 说您不会回去,先生!”“No,” said Harry angrily. “Give me my friends’ letters!”“不,”哈利生气地说,“把我朋友的信给我!”“Then Harry Potter leaves Dobby no choice,” said the elf sadly.“那么多比就没有别的选择了。” Before Harry could move, Dobby had darted to the bedroom door, pulled it open, and sprinted down the stairs. Mouth dry, stomach lurching, Harry sprang after him, trying not to make a sound. He jumped the last six steps, landing catlike on the hall carpet, looking around for Dobby. From the dining room he heard Uncle Vernon saying, “. . . tell Petunia that very funny story about those American plumbers, Mr. Mason. She’s been dying to hear . . .”她一直想听……”Harry ran up the hall into the kitchen and felt his stomach disappear. /201205/183355So then my great grandpa would feel the coldness of ghosts and would hear the banshee's wail, and my Aunt Mary recalled him saying that the banshee's wail is the worst. Then the wailing and the touch of the ghosts would pass on and his horse would move again. That was all my aunt Mary could remember. Now since my grandpa had seen and heard the banshees, I'm beginning to think we may have a banshee in our family. But not just because of my great grandpa, but because of my mom as well. When my mom was nine, she woke up in the middle of the night to look outside the window into the backyard. Glittering in the moonlight, she saw a woman weeping. My mom could hear her cries and said they were more like the wind (she told me this before I that most banshees cries ARE more like the wind). She also said that the woman was floating above their swimming pool and her appearance was unexplainable. My mom claimed that this woman looked young, but seemed as if she had lived for many years and was an old spirit. She also said that the woman had fair flowing hair. After a while of staring, my mom just lay her head back down on the pillow and drifted off to sleep. Then I think one or two weeks later, my mom's grandparents died – in the same week. Coincidence? I wonder if I'm going to see one. Article/200809/479421 My first sea journey Before I begin my story I would like to tell you a little about myself. I was born in the year 1632,in the city of York in the north of England. My father was German but he came tolive and work in England. Soon after that he married my mother who was English. Her family name was Robinson so when I was born they called me Robinson after her. My father did well in his business and I went to a good school. He wanted me to get a good job and live a quiet com fortable life. But I did not want that. I wanted adventure and an exciting life. #39; I want to be a sailor and go to sea #39; I told my mother and father.“我想成为一名水手去航行,”我告诉父母亲。They were very unhappy about this. #39; Please do not go #39; my father said. #39; You will not be happy you know.“不要去,”父亲说。 Sailors have a difficult and dangerous life. #39; And be because I loved him and he was unhappy I tried to forget about the sea.“水手过着艰苦而且危险的生活。” But I could not forget and about a year later I saw a friend in town. His father had a ship and my friend saidto me #39; We #39;re sailing to London tomorrow. Why do not you come with us #39; And so on September 1st,1651,I went to Hull and the next day we sailed for London. But a few days later there was a strong wind. The sea was rough and dangerous and the ship went up and down up and down. I was very ill and very afraid. #39; Oh I do not want to die #39; I cried. #39; I want to live If I live I #39;ll go home and never go to sea again #39; The next day the wind dropped and the sea was quiet and be autiful again.“哦,我不想死!” #39; Well Bob #39; my friend laughed. #39; How do you feel now The wind was not too bad.“好了,鲍伯,”我的朋友笑着说。 #39; #39; What #39; I cried. #39; It was a terrible storm. #39; #39; Oh that was not a storm #39; my friend answered.“什么!” #39; Just a little wind.“仅仅是小风而已。”Forget it.“忘记它吧。”Come and have a drink. #39; After a few drinks with my friend I felt better.“来,喝一杯。” I forgot about the danger and decided not to go home. I didn#39;twant my friends and family to laugh at me I stayed in London for some time but I still wanted to go to sea. So when the captain of a ship asked me to gowith him to Guinea in Africa I agreed. And so I went to sea for the second time. It was a good ship and everything went well at first but I was very ill again. Then when we were near theCanary Is lands a Turkish pirate ship came after us. They were famous thieves of the sea at that time. There was along hard fight but when it finished we and the ship were prisoners. The Turkish captain and his men took us to Sallee in Moroc. They wanted to sell us as slaves in the marketsthere. But in the end the Turkish captain decided to keep me for himself and took me home with him. This was asudden and terrible change in my life. I was now a slave and this Turkish captain was my master. Article/201202/171629

Alabama Airlines has notified its pilots to stop topping off their fuel tanks. Alarmed, pilot Buck Rogers sent a copy of the memo to Time Magazine, which investigated the matter. It discovered that AA was reacting to a 50-percent increase in fuel prices in the last year alone. The memo warned pilots to put only the amount of fuel into the plane that was necessary to reach the destination. The memo reminded pilots that their primary responsibility was to ensure that AA's profits increased every quarter. Topping off the tanks resulted in extra fueling time and extra weight. The extra time and weight were reducing company profits. The memo concluded with these instructions: turn off the engines when stuck in long lines on the runways; if there is a strong tailwind, turn off all the engines and glide; and, wherever it is available, use "economy" jet fuel.Pilots immediately complained, saying that such a policy put their lives and the public’s lives at great risk. Yielding to their complaints, AA allowed pilots to put in an extra ten gallons of fuel.Even with the extra ten gallons, Rogers had two near disasters. The first time, his plane ran out of fuel just as the wheels touched the runway. His plane had to be towed to the terminal. Rogers received a congratulatory phone call from AA's president! The second time, Rogers had to land his plane on a freeway, still under construction, 10 miles short of the Atlanta runway. This time the president told him he was making AA look bad. He told Rogers to save fuel AND land at the airport.“People have no idea how little AA cares about their safety,” Rogers said. “Saving fuel is more important to management than saving lives.” Article/201105/137727

Do as the Romans Did? Inaugurated1 in A.D. 80 by the emperor Titus, the Roman Colosseum is the earliest prototype of the modern superdome. With a perimeter of 527 meters, 80 entrances, and the capacity to hold between 50 and 70,000 spectators, it rivals even the most advanced sports stadiums in size and utility of design, while greatly surpassing them in architectural grandeur. Inaugurated in A.D. The Colosseum was constructed with tens of thousands of tons of a type of marble called travertine and held together with 300 tons of iron. When completed, it rose up 57 meters in four levels. The lower three provided seating for the spectators and were surrounded by magnificent arcades and 80 perfectly symmetrical arches, each embellished with a statue. The attic story contained brackets which could suspend a canopy for shade. In spite of its glorious design, the Colosseum was built largely for the distraction of the masses in a cynical age, providing dramatic and often gruesome entertainments. Armies of slaves fought for their lives in horrific recreations of famous battles. Gladiators fought wild animals and one another to the death in return for their continued survival, the glory of victory, and precious gifts from their benefactors. These spectacles of gratuitous violence may seem a little anachronistic, but they are also analogues in many ways to professional sports today. Perhaps the Colosseum is not really such an "ancient" artifact after all. Article/200803/30103
